Not only did I make the mistake of purchasing one of these - I purchased two. One for personal use and one for use at work (I'm a Facility Manager at a medical facility).
First off - it was my mistake for not doing any on-line research. At the time of purchase, Home Depot was running a special; with the purchase of the drill you received a mail-in certificate good for a free hammer drill. For 200.00 I thought for sure that these had to be good units (like and idiot, I assumed a high price equated to good performance).
In a nutshell: I have had the same problem with BOTH units, so I know the issues are not a fluke. As others here have stated - the batteries don't last, warranty issue is laughable at best, battery power is sporadic, and the drills just don't have any power. With most drills of this size (18volt)the chuck should twist out of your hand when you grab it and apply power. With these - they stop dead in their tracks.
After owning (and going through) several Craftsman drills I thought I would bite the bullet and get a drill that would last years, but these (both units) have failed in less than a year's time. They performed well for about a month or two before acting up. To say it's maddening would be an understatement - especially since I depend on having a tool that performs.
Please trust me, DO NOT waste your money on these drills. I can't believe the individuals who wrote the positive reviews have had their units for any length of time. Do your research, shop carefully, but steer clear of Ridgid.
