Tools and Hardware Reviews of Robert Larson 800-1800 Honing GuideCustomer Review: I gave it a three Summary: 3 Stars
I saw all the reviews on this tool...and being an optimist I trusted the better reviews....
I screwed up....lol
I guess its an alright honing guide for someone who just casually needs to home a chisel to a sharp edge. I wouldnt put anything I value in it though..
I tried sharpening an older craftsman chisel that I beat on and while it did sharpen it....and got it sharp....It was a pain to get it to the correct bevel in the jig..and the chisel was hard to get in there staright.
I actually built a jig years ago....out of all thread rod a hard rubber roller and some nuts and bolts....and I trusted it to keep the bevel square.... something I wouldnt trust this thing to do..... enough sharpenings with this and you are going to end up with a skew chisel....lol
Not that bad...really....
Like I said...homeowners...occasional wood butchers....carpenters.....it will do a fine job.
Serious woodworkers.....learn to hone by hand like the guys a hundred years ago did or invest in a better jig.
I will use this on my beater chisels....because it is faster than honing using your hands and fingers to maintain the bevel....and I have not tried it on a plane blade yet....although I am thinking of yanking the blade out of an old millers falls "beater" I have laying around.
But I wont use it on any of my fine chisels.....Id rather just take my time and hone them by hand....takes longer but its also less likely to end up with a screwed up bevel or out of square chisel.
