Tools and Hardware Reviews of SOY-Gel Paint and Urethane Remover, QuartCustomer Review: Works great! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought SoyGel to strip varnish/poly from an endtable so I can re-stain without worrying about the effects of old poly interfearing. The whole process (application, set time, and clean-up) took me about 1 1/2 hours, which I was very happy with considering I'd never done this before with any product. I bought a 1-qt. bottle, and only used the volume that is in the top funnel part of the bottle.
Overall: very easy to use, non-irritating for both skin and breathing fumes, and just generally a piece of cake. It's very goopy, which works out great for giving good thick coverage (don't be skimpy!!). I didn't actually have a paint brush handy, so I used a paint scraper to spread it over the top, and used a paper towel to smear it over the vertical sides. Let it sit 30min and scrape it off. Then just wipe down with water and a sponge. Voila!
Note: when wiping down with water, if the sponge "catches" anywhere or you see paper-like scrapings/pieces, it just means the SoyGel wasn't finished in that spot. Just reapply in that spot, let sit again, and it'll fix it.
Highly recommended for ease of use, non-toxicity, bio-degradability, and made in Bloomington, IL!!!
Customer Review: Bio-friendly paint stripper that works!! Summary: 5 Stars
Wanted to try a bio-friendly stripper and while not cheap, SOY-Gel works beautifully at removing varnish off an old maple dresser we recently purchased. The longer left on, the easier it was to remove the varnish which was not that thick to begin with on the dresser. I left the product on for about 15 to 20 minutes before removing the varnish. You do need to remove the residue and I used some steel wool and warm water (but not enough to raise the grain of the wood). I would recommend this technique to neutralize the effect of the stripper.
SOY-Gel did not burn my skin when I got it on my hands - unlike other toxic strippers. While I have not tried this stripper on paint, I would recommend buying SOY-Gel if you wanted a friendly bio-stripper that is odorless and easy to use. I even reused the product that I scrapped off the sides, top and drawers. So, while a quart (which is what I purchased to try the product) didn't seem like much, I still have almost half a bottle left after stripped a 6-drawer dresser. I am very happy with my purchase of SOY-Gel.
Customer Review: so far so good Summary: 5 Stars
I bought Soy Gel after reading many of the reviews here. I wanted to strip the paint off all the millwork in my living room and dining room. The people we purchased the house from painted acrylic paint over oil without using a primer and the paint was peeling and looked terrible. My house is 100 year old bungalow and luckily there are only 2 coats of paint on the wood. I liked the idea that it cleaned up with water and wouldn't burn me so I bought a gallon.
After completing half of the living room I realized that patience is a virtue. You have to let the product sit and do the job. I found that doing a section at night then scraping it off the next day worked the best. Apply again to stubborn areas and then you can finish in about 2 hours. I was able to get most sections clean with just steel wool and warm water. My husband about shot me when I told him how much it cost (need to get another gallon) but agreed that it was doing a very good job without having to ventilate or burn me.
Customer Review: It really works! Summary: 5 Stars
This is my first review ever and I order a lot of stuff over the net. I had to write how impressed I am with this product! I tried to stain my concrete driveway because I heard how nice it looked but I bought the WRONG stain and as soon as I rolled it on, my husband and I knew that it was a mistake! WE stopped immediately but now there was a large gray area of concrete stain. I went to the paint store and they sold me citistrip but they even doubt that it would work. The I read all the reviews and decided to return it and wait for this Soy-Gel stripper. When It arrived, I spread a thick layer on the paint and covered it with a plastic bag. Let it sit for about 3 hours. I first started scrubbing with a wired brush and it looked like it wasn't going to come off. Then I read the directions again and saw that I needed to rinse with water. Well.... I put the hose on full and shot all the paint off!!!! It was really cool to see! So... even though it was a bit expensive it was worth the 1 shot deal! Highly recommended!
Customer Review: Low odor, but not as effective as they say. Summary: 4 Stars
This stripper is the least noxious of any that I have tried so far, so I give it much praise on that front. It does take off all the types of paint that it indicates, but in my experience, it requires multiple applications, particularly when there is latex paint on top of older types of paint. I'm stripping doors that have between 3 and 7 layers of paint. It is taking up to 3 applications to remove all the paint, even when I leave it on for many hours. It seems that the top layers of latex are not allowing the stripper to fully penetrate the lower layers.
Given the multiple applications, it is taking one full quart to strip one side of one interior door. It's less work than my previous method of a heat gun, and the fumes are not at all bad, so I will probably continue. If you are only removing 1-2 layers of paint, the coverage estimates may be accurate for you, but when you have thick layers of old paint, you will probably need more stripper than you'd expect.
