Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rockwell RK5102K SoniCrafter Deluxe 72-Piece KitCustomer Review: Well made and very versatile Summary: 4 Stars
In my admittedly limited use of the product so far, I have been very pleased with its versatility and usability. The weight of the product which, at first, seemed to be a liability, actually allows greater control of the tool by providing stability when cutting or sanding. Unlike a rotary tool (like a Dremel), the Sonicrafter stays where you put it and since the blade oscillates instead of rotating, it doesn't generate nearly as much dust or debris.
The contents of the 72 piece kit appear to be well thought out. The small sanding pad has been especially useful; allowing work in tight spaces without disassembling the project.
I have not made use of the dust collection system included with the 72-piece kit, so I can't comment on its efficacy except to say that it doesn't interfere with the use of the Sonicrafter. I've been able to complete all my projects with it in place.
A very solidly built and well thought out product.
Customer Review: Great Tool!! Summary: 5 Stars
I am doing a construction project and have to do several cut outs through 3/4" plywood. I had a little trouble getting the correct settings but after reading the owner's guide (which really needs some work, it is very poorly done), I was able to figure things out. The big thing to learn is to not push too hard and let the blade do the work. Although it is slower than using the jigsaw, the cuts are much cleaner and it is easier to cut a straight line. The other attachments are excellent, the scraper is great at removing old thin set, adhesive, and other things from concrete. The detail sander works great.
I did have problems with blades working loose at first, but once I learned the proper speed setting for each application and listened for the click of the blade setting in place, that problem disappeared. This is a tremendous value compared to Fein and I would not even consider the Dremel, it feels like a toy compared to this.
Customer Review: Sonic Crafter Summary: 4 Stars
The tool works well to do what it says it will do.
I used it to trim the end of a fireplace mantle to make room for built-in bookshelves. I used a skill saw to cut as far as possible, then I was able to cut straight in to trim the rest of the wood up to the sheetrock.
It does not cut as smooth and fast as shown in infomercials, but that is not surprising.
The 72 piece kit is mostly sanding discs so if you are not going to do a lot of sanding don't bother paying the extra cost. Also, sanding is a self-destructive activity because the dust destroys tools. You are better off buying a cheap (more disposable) sander and saving the expensive Sonic Crafter for saw cutting.
The saw blades are expensive, and only four came in my 72 piece kit though the picture shows seven. For the few circumstance you need them I think the blades are worth the cost.
I am happy with my purchase.
Customer Review: Rockwell Rocks! Summary: 5 Stars
Wow, what a tool. I had to replace the old rusty baseboard registers and returns in my house that were over 50 years old, had ball and chain adjustors that were long gone or broken. Well the local Home Depot does not carry baseboard registers or returns, but Lowes does. So, when I get them home and try to install the first one, guess what, the new ones are about 1/2" wider than the old ones. How do I cut about 1/4" off the old, dry wood moldings without creating a big new job for myself? The Rockwell Sonicrafter to the rescue. Pencil marked the moldings with the new returns and used the "plunge" cut technique and in about 5 minutes I was done with the first one. I don't think a jigsaw would have worked as well or at all. A "zip" type tool may have worked, but would have created a lot of dust in the air. The Rockwell Sonicrafter was the perfect tool for this job. Now back to work and the rest of those registers and returns.
Customer Review: Left Black Marks on Shower Tile Summary: 3 Stars
I am giving the Sonicrafter a 3 Star at this point. My final review could go higher or lower depending on any help from Rockwell on repairing black marks on the porcelain tile in my shower. I used the scraper tool to remove caulking from a shower enclosure and almost every place the blade touched the tile, it left a black mark. I used a medium speed (3)and a very light touch. The caulking came off like a hot knife through butter. However, I tried soft scrub, Clorox Clean Up, Magic Eraser, and mineral spirits and nothing took off any of the black marks. The surface of the tile isn't gouged, so the stain appears to be on the surface. I just hope that the marks aren't "burnt" into the surface. Also, Rockwell support isn't open on the weekends when us do it yourselfers are using the tool. I read the instruction manual and there isn't any warning on this and I have seen ads doing this exact same thing.
