Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rockwell RK9000 Jawhorse

Customer Review: Does the job, well built for the price point
Summary: 5 Stars

I was impressed straight up with how sturdy this is. I'm a self employed welder, machinist, and fabricator with over 30 years experience. I've also been involved in product design and development, I understand the trade-offs inherent in the decisions that must be made for each and every component, to hit the target price point.

Fortunately, I read some reviews before buying, and so was aware of the issue of making sure the front switch is in lock mode before trying to clamp. And I still forgot to do so one time, but caught myself before doing significant damage. Note to self: RTFM and pay attention!

Not sure if this can be done, but my only suggestion to Rockwell would be to try and come up with a way for this slide switch to default to lock mode. I'd like to see it stay in unlock mode when so moved, until the jaws are unclamped, then snap back to lock mode. Too busy to get into it right now and see if that can be done, but will eventually. Maybe a retrofit hack... (sure to void the warranty tho...)

I'd say this is probably the best Christmas present I've ever given myself.

Customer Review: Jawhorse abuse
Summary: 4 Stars

My wife purchased the Jawhorse as a Christmas gift for me after watching a infomercial on TV. As a general rule, I've found that most products sold via TV infomercials are junk that one wouldn't buy if they saw it first hand in a store. Much to my surprise, I found the Jawhorse quite well made. Most of my tools see much use and much abuse. I have clamped large and small items, used it as a anvil and beat on it with hammers. My only problem that I foresee is with the rubber jaws. I use the Jawhorse a lot for clamping steel that I am grinding, cutting or welding and the heat generated is wrecking the rubber jaws. And yes, I know that the instruction advise agains clamping hot items. As I said, my tools see lots of abuse. One time I had it set up on the garage door apron and my wife backed into it with her pickup truck. The only damage was to the truck. Only time will tell how much more abuse it will take before something breaks but so far so good. One concern is that some reviewers have mentioned that Rockwell has poor customer service and I wonder if I will be able to purchase replacement rubber jaws.

Customer Review: Worth the money
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this to replace 2 cheaper portable saw stands I bought from Costco. This was significantly more expensive, but you get what you pay for. Compared to my other stands, the Jawhorse is extremely stable and actually folds into a much smaller package (which was important for me as I live in an apartment). The extra plus for me was that I was considering getting a vice at the time, but am reluctant to clamp it on to any of my normal furniture (lacking a real workbench) for fear that it would mar this surface.

Pros:

* Very solid, no give on this item
* Vice works well
* Easy to lock items into place
* Folds into a very small package, which can be laid flat or stood vertically depending on where it is stored

Cons:

* Would be nice if the sliding mechanism used bearings rather than sliding along and scratching the paint.
* Paint is not as high quality as possible, will wear eventually.

I've only had this thing for a week and have already used it for 3 random projects. Overall, these are fantastic value for money.

Customer Review: Can't get it to unlock/release
Summary: 2 Stars

I've seen this piece of equipment in the infomercial and took a look at it at Lowe's. It looked great. So I purchased it. No one is ever around when I want to fix something. I figure this is just the extra set of hands. Yup! I used it for a couple hours and was really excited that I'd made such a good choice. However, yesterday I went out to demonstrate it's wonder, put in a piece of wood and clamped. So far so good. Unlocked it to take piece of wood out and pressed the foot peddle. Nothing! I've pressed it again. I've relocked and unlocked it again. Pressed again. Nothing. Now I can't get the piece of wood out.
I called the Rockwell customer service, sat listening to this fellow telling how to make iced tea [recorded]. Then they tell me I can leave my number and they'll call back within one business day. OK. But then they disconnect me. I even tried to go on their web site. It doesn't open up either.
I'm taking this back to the store where I bought it.
I still sure did like it the first day though. Does anyone know how to get this thing to release?

Customer Review: Work Assistant
Summary: 5 Stars

My review won't be lengthy because there are plenty excellent reviews detailed in Amazon regarding this product. Quit frankly, people love this wonderfully designed project assistant or there wouldn't be 230+ reviews on Amazon. I find it amazingly easy to use (watch the video they have prepared and you will never have a question about how it functions) for about anything you can think of. Rockwell has even answered questions about plastic parts ... some of you are worried about. Engineering is in the details and Rockwell isn't worried about plastic pieces not functioning properly. Its like anything else, you treat it right; it will treat you right.

I have Black & Decker portable work table that I purchased over 30 years ago and still use it. Has it always been perfect? No. However, you first read about the product then you use it within those guidelines ... and they last. It will still be out there with me when I need that extra surface. Now, after this Jawhorse lasts 30 years the Black & Decker will be 60 and I will be 99 and ...
