Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rust-Oleum 223081 Magnetic PrimerCustomer Review: Just okay Summary: 3 Stars
I used this product along with Rustoleum Chalkboard paint to paint a magnetic chalkboard on the wall of our kitchen for our kids. Having read the reviews before purchasing, I had the store put it through the shaker to mix before bringing it home. The can I got must have been sitting on the shelf for a while, because even having done this, there was still a thick 'sludge' at the bottom of the can that I had to try to mix in before using it. To avoid having the same problem, I'd recommend having the store stir it up before putting it through the shaker.
I applied several (probably 4-5) coats of the primer and then probably 2 coats of the chalkboard paint. The result was a really good chalkboard, but the less impressive magnet board. Only the strongest or lightest magnets managed to stay in place with any kind of consistency. It was still enough for the kids to enjoy, but I was really hoping for more.
Overall, if you're going to use this product, I'd recommend making sure the primer is well mixed in the store, that you apply as many coats as you can to build up the magnetic properties, and that you get some really strong magnets to use with it. I'm getting ready to make another magnetic chalkboard for our new house, but this time I'm skipping the magnetic primer and going use the chalkboard paint on a piece of sheet steel. It'll probably cost about $10-$20 more than the primer, but I expect the magnets will work much better this time. And, as an added benefit to this approach, I'll be able to take it down and re-install it after we do a kitchen remodel in a couple years.
Customer Review: frustrating - doesn't live up to expectations Summary: 2 Stars
I wish I would have read the reviews here before I purchased this. Sigh. I am on my 7th coat and so far I can only get light weight magnets with a lot of surface area to stick to the wall. I painted a 3' by 5' area of wall. I had the paint shaken at the store as recommended on the box and I didn't notice any problems keeping the paint a consistent color nor did I notice any large clumps or anything like that. I used a small foam roller and the paint went on smoothly. The confusing thing is that the instructions recommend 3 thin coats and the instructions also say that the can should cover 16 square feet. Hmmmm. So, how am I on coat 7 with paint left and I am covering 15 square feet? Maybe my "thin" coats were too thin? My plan is to just continue to put on coats of paint until it is gone and then see how it works. I also ordered some of those super strong rare earth magnets, but I don't really understand how those are going to work since the only magnets that seem to work right now are the ones that are light and thin with a lot of surface area. On a funny note, the paint tray, paint roller and stir stick are VERY magnetic. I put the foam roller in a plastic bag and stuck a magnet to it and had a tough time getting it off. I also got some wet paint on the magnet and when I washed the paint off the little magnetic particles stayed on the magnet - so they are in there - they just don't seem to work well when painted thinly on the wall. I won't purchase this again and would not recommend it. It is a waste of time.
Customer Review: Good product if done right. Summary: 4 Stars
I did a total of 5 coats. I used the entire can on a 2x6 area. I followed the directions and made sure I mixed the paint really well. I stirred for 15 minutes straight before each coat. This morning I tried putting on some magnets. The flat bizcard type stick, the letters from the Fridge Phonics stick, the animals from the Fridge Farm stick, the Fridge Farm unit sticks. Today I'm applying the chalkboard paint on top. Great product I think. No complaints here. It does take sometime to do and mixing the paint the way Rustoleum recommends is very important. I used a 3/8" nap roller. I would definitely recommend this product for use in a child's playroom or for a family message station.
**Just an update...
I forgot to mention the paint was applied on a wall with a "dippled" texture. Had my wall been smooth, I think the paint would of layed up smooth due to the fact I stirred for 15 minutes before each coat. Yesterday I applied 2 coats of the chalkboard paint. All the magnets I mentioned above still stick and does hold up some artwork that my child made. So far, so happy. I am waiting 3 days until I can "condition" the chalkboard paint. Once conditioned, we will use the board for a few days. I will post another update once I actually "wash" the board with a damp cloth. The directions say not to do that until 7 days have past.
Customer Review: Don't Do It! Summary: 1 Stars
How did I not read the reviews for this product before painting a 2x8 section of my beautiful white kitchen wall???!?!?! I'm beyond upset that I was so stupid and didn't at least "test" an area. After following the instructions like the usual OCD person that I am (had magnetic paint + chalkboard paint shaken at Home Depot, painted 3 coats of magnetic, then 2 coats of chalkboard), I'm left with a wall with NO MAGNETISM! Holy moses. How did I not test out the magnets before starting the chalkboard paint in the first place?
Here is my advice for other shoppers:
1) Drop the idea of making your wall magnetic. Unless you want to paint 20 coats and have a super-thick paint job and even then it's not guaranteed
2) Just go with the chalkboard paint, and make SURE that you have the surface PERFECT. There are paint roller marks on mine and it makes me sad :( I don't even want to try to write on it. It will be like writing on a bumpy chalkboard and that's the worst!
3) Buy a chalkboard to hang up instead
I'm so so sad. I'm calling the company and Home Depot tomorrow to get my money back. Robbery!
Customer Review: Success depends on the user Summary: 5 Stars
If you read the can, it addresses only 2-3 coats. The fact is, you need to use more than that. I used different width painters tape, taped off a decorative 3x4 (approx) space and the used the entire can. Every hour or so, I'd add another coat. When I'd used the entire can and let it dry/cure for 2 days, I then applied 2 good coats of chalkboard paint over the top. My magnets stick even with those two coats over the top of the magnetic primer. I think that anyone who approaches this product thinking it's going to have the same magnetic hold as the side of their fridge is delusional. LOL It's a craft kind of thing...not an industrial kind of thing. I would suggest Rare Earth magnets, although our other magnets stick just fine. Now, you won't be holding up a phone book with this primer, but it DOES work....just not with only 2 or 3 coats. And we found that the more time passed, the better the magnetism was. Not sure if that's reality or our perception, but we're loving it !!
