Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rust-Oleum 223081 Magnetic PrimerCustomer Review: Does NOT work with Dry Erase Marker Board paint Summary: 3 Stars
We applied 4 coats to a 10ft wide by 8ft tall wall. Flat thin printable magnets (like business cards) worked well.
YES! You must apply paint very soon after have a machine shake it. The 1st can we tried to use turned out very bad with hand shaking and stiring with a paint stirrer.
Our goal was to make a HUGE dry-erase marker board. We applied 4 coats of dry erase maker board paint on top of the magnetic primer. We used it for 2 months but noticed some of the colors (red and black) bonded with the board and were very hard to erase.
After 90 days the Dry Erase Marker Board paint started to turn yellow "ish" and any marker colors were hard to erase after 1 day.
A call to Rust-O-Leum customer service lead us to their engineering dept, and they stated that the chemical make-up of the 2 paints were not compatible and can not be used together.
We now have a 4ft x 8ft Dry Erase board screwed to the wall.
Customer Review: DON"T DO IT!!! Summary: 1 Stars
Ok. So I not only read the reviews. I called my BFF, who actually works at rustoleum, to get the skinny. long story short. DON"T DO IT. If the fact that it doesn't actually hold a magnet isn't enough of a reason, think about this. If you are painting an area of a child's room/play room the VOC is sky high. The off gassing is incredible and I can only imagine the brain cells that I have destroyed on this failed project. It smelled so bad that I packed up the kids and went to a friends. The headache I got from painting (while wearing a mask) was incredible. Then there is the fact that it is NOT water soluble so clean up is a real pain.
I haven't done the chalkboard layer yet. Not sure if I will just cut my losses or not.
This is a horrible product and should be removed from the consumer market. Seriously, it is not only a waste of money, it's a waste of time and effort and possibly brain cells!!
Customer Review: buyer beware Summary: 1 Stars
After following the package directions completly I applied 3 coats of black (not grey) magnetic primer I attempted to attach many different size and wt. magnets without success. At that point I got on Amazon and saw the other reviews. I decided to go ahead and try a few more coats since a few people had said it worked for them. Well after 6 coats I am able to attach a small light wt. magnet which will not be able to hold anything up (such as a light wt. photo). I would not call this a success by any means. I am now attempting to cover up 6 coats of primer on a area of my wall 2x8. The area is raised and will never look right! If I had to do it over agian I would have stopped after the 3rd coat and took the product back and purchased a magnetic board. I have contacted Rust Oleum and hope to get some kind of a refund for this mess. Hope this saves someone else from this headache.
Customer Review: Doesn't work very well Summary: 2 Stars
I have a large cabinet door which I had previously put a lot of nails into to hold my calendar and papers. I was told about this product and thought I would try it out. I had the can shaken in the store, brought it home, and painted 2 layers on the door (waiting an hour between) and then a third coat the next morning. The results were very disappointing. A refrigerator magnet with a hook on it will not hold onto this surface. A smaller round magnet will hold but will not support even a piece of paper under it. It just slides down the surface. I decided to give it one more try. I stirred the paint for 10 minutes and then applied a 4th coat. Results were the same. The lighter magnets will stick and maybe hold up a small piece of paper but one jar of the door and everything would fall off. I gave up and went back to putting nails into the door.
Customer Review: Works, but its paint - dont expect it to be as string as a fridge. Summary: 4 Stars
I put on about 6 coats. The instructions said thin coats but i went a little thicker. Enough to easily cover everything, but not so much that would leave thick paint trails. And i would keep rolling over and over until the paint dried to help reduce the roller marks. Don't press too hard on the foam roller or you will leave roller tracks.
I'd say I get about 1/3 to 1/2 the attraction that i'd get from a regular fridge. Flat sheet magnets hold on decently. Regular magnets will hold but just barely. Rare earth magnets hold onto this with the same strength that a regular fridge magnet holds onto the fridge.
I used rustoleum chalkboard paint after this. I put on about 4 coats, then sanded with 600 grit sandpaper to make it smoother.
Works like i expected. Its paint after all, so don't expect miracles with this.
