Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rust-Oleum 223081 Magnetic Primer

Customer Review: don't bother
Summary: 1 Stars

We wanted a combination magnet and chalkboard wall, so we bought both the chalkboard paint and magnetic paint from Rustoleum. This magnetic paint was a bust. After many coats not even the lightest child's alphabet magnets will take hold. We use chalk on the wall and have great fun with our 2 year old, but I wish we hadn't painted with this magnetic paint. It's full of metal particles and makes the surface VERY rough. Chalk doesn't draw a smooth line. When she's ready to start writing letters, the wall will NOT be useful. We'll have to sand it all off or paint primer over it and start from scratch. Lots of money and time wasted. Not too mention smelly fumes.

Customer Review: Not for kids stuff like leapfrog fridge phonics and word wammer
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this to use on a wall to put all my kids word wammers and the letters and the sounds fridge phonics and animals and stuff from leap frog. I shook the can and stirred as suggested. It was an even black color when done shaking, and nothing was stuck on the bottom. I put on 3 layers like suggested, but that didn't even hold the letters. So, I then put another 3 layers, and now the letters stay on, but not the main units to use with the letters. I am now thinking of just going and getting a thin metal board and using the chalkboard paint on that and hanging that on the wall. I do NOT recommend this at all!

Customer Review: Sorry, it just doesn't work
Summary: 1 Stars

We bought this product fully aware of the negative reviews, but we figured it was worth a shot. Sorry to say that, despite our best efforts, this product just doesn't work. We applied 5 thick coats and we can barely hang a magnet by itself, let alone a magnet suspending even a piece of paper.

We also didn't fully realize that this primer is a deep black, so it has a major impact on the color of the top coat of the paint.

Save your money, and especially your effort - skip this product and buy a thumbtack board or a magnetic board and hang that on your wall instead.

Customer Review: Fun!
Summary: 5 Stars

I almost didn't buy the magnetic primer based on reviews but I'm glad I did. We followed the directions on the paint can and were very careful to make sure we made a smooth finish with a foam roller. I was so excited to see my wood magnets stick to the painted area in the morning. A couple of things to note:

1) The paint is black and might be hard to cover with some paints. Behr Ultra Premium Plus covered with one coat!
2) This is magnetic paint and not a sheet of steel. Don't expect it to be like your frig or filing cabinet.

Good luck!

Customer Review: Should have a warning label - SHAKE IN STORE IMMEDIATELY BEFORE USING!!!!!!!!
Summary: 3 Stars

Didn't really see the recommendation to have shaken in the store right before using this... Ended up having to use two cans when 1 might have done the trick.

Have this shaken in the store, then bring it home and use. Otherwise you end up with a thick layer of magnetic sludge at the bottom of the can after you've put 2 coats of primer on - that don't have many magnetic properties!

Looks like this is going to work... We're creating a wall to hang the kids art work on... But we ended up putting 6 coats of primer on...
