Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rust-Oleum 7860519 Tub And Tile Refinishing 2-Part Kit, White

Customer Review: Great to renew fiberglass tub/shower
Summary: 4 Stars

I used this product to refinish a 20+ year old fiberglass one piece tub and surround in our rental property. I was very reluctant to use this thinking that in no way could a product be brushed or rolled on and give a good finish. I was prepared to use a cheap HVLP spray unit , but figured I'd start with a smooth roller and see how that went.

I did the prep with bleach, then abrasive cleaner, then Lime-away. I didn't do any sanding as it was smooth and I figured the abrasive had given just enough of a texture for the paint to "bite". I mixed the two parts thoroughly and it mixes up a bit thinner than I thought and figured it might be easy to spray compared to latex paint. I started with the smooth roller and was very impressed with the "self-leveling" action of the paint. I decided to go the entire first coat with the roller. After waiting for about 45 minutes I got ready to do coat 2 and figured now I could spray on a nice smooth finish coat and be done. I tried a quick spray and didn't get a good result, could be the lack of further thinning or my cheap gun. No worries though I just went back to using the roller for the second coat.

A high quality mask for vapor is a must with this product.

I'm ecstatic over the result, as I was considering to rip out the tub/surround and replace so I see this as a $300+ savings for me with much less headaches. I felt it worked well enough that I would use it at home not just on a rental property.

Customer Review: 30 year old tub & tile look like new!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this product for the bathtub & surrounding tile for an older investment property-the bathroom tub & tile would not come clean no matter what kind of cleaning product I used. Tub & tile had mold, mildew, caulk coming out-a complete mess. Got several quotes from the "1 day bathroom renovation" companies & they were all between $3500 & $6000.00! Did not want to spend that kind of money. Did research on google, found Rust-Oleum kit & read the reviews. Hired a professional handyman company to do the refinishing because I don't have any kind of a sander & I know this is an important step. Now, the bathtub & tile look 100% brand new-the finish is gorgeous! Professionals advised me to use only Scrubbing Bubbles cleanser-they warned that anything abrasive or any product containing bleach were an absolute no go if I want the finish to last. Completed project was around $600. including 2 Rust-Oleum kits purchased from Amazon. The kits were far less expensive than the cost at a large national "builder supply" store. The whole project took 2 l/2 days to complete (dry time between coats is critical.) I'm thrilled with the results-if it lasts a few years, I'll be happy! If it needs to be reapplied again, I will use Rust-Oleum & have it professionally done & still be way ahead financially. Handyman company said they would recommend this product to future clients-truly a 5 star...just hope it lasts-no crystal ball on this aspect of the product.

Customer Review: Worked as advertised.
Summary: 5 Stars

I had an old mid-80s shower stall. I actually have the skills to replace the shower pan, but it was such a shame to replace it just because it was slightly discolored. I used this kit and applied two coats and it looked like new. It has been used daily for 5 months and still looks great. I even replaced the shower doors and it looked like a completely new renovation. My only negative comment would be that this mixes to the consistency of water. Maybe they do that so it can soak into any and every crack but in the case of my project I wish it had gone on a little thicker. Because it didn't go on thick, one coat was not enough and the old stains were still showing so I needed to apply a second coat. As for coverage, the shower pan was the size of a bath tub and even after two coats I still had 3/4 of the paint left. Unfortunately, I could not apply any more for the next 24 hours and since the 3/4 of can would harden before I could use it again, it had to go in the trash. In hindsight I should have mixed the product in a separate container. My guess that if you're doing a full bath tub you will easily have enough for two full coats or more. Also on any project if you want to do more than two coats, get two kits or do what I didn't and mix the product in a separate container because you cannot apply three coats before the mixed product hardens. As for applying the product I used a mini roller and it worked well.

Customer Review: Good Stuff!
Summary: 4 Stars

Good stuff. Excellent value. Simple to apply but does take some patience and painting confidence/skill.

I used it to paint a bathroom (green) and kitchen sink in white. As mentioned previously having a good, bright light helps with an even application (and avoid runs!). Particularly with the bathroom sink with lots of corners this was important. For tight/corner work make sure to have the best quality, very soft/fine brush.

I did find that once dry (about an hour) you could gently (200 wet/dry) sand away runs and imperfections between coats (use a tack rag to clean up).

After mixing, the paint will slowly change consistency (at least when I was painting low humidity/around 70 degrees). Starts out fairly thin which makes covering old dark paint more challenging. But then by say two hours, it's much thicker and perhaps with first strokes easier to apply BUT now it sets up more quickly on the surface so more caution was needed with blending in old/new areas or going back over.

Plan on two coats (or more) for good coverage. Also, the first coat will give you good practice for applying that smoother, more consistent second coat.

Ventilation is important. I'd expect that without it you might get a bit woozy.

Cleaned up with lacquer thinner easily. Mineral spirits/paint thinner won't work!

Customer Review: Great Stuff for a budget!
Summary: 5 Stars

I would like to give this 4 stars but I really can't for the price it costs. I did a budget remodel on my bathroom and I had the choice of replacing the tub or getting it professionally refinished. Well when someone told me $400-$500 to do it I thought may as well try this stuff first.

Why maybe 4 stars? well about 3 days after I finished a shower caddy fell and it chipped the surface. Since then I really have not had any other chipping and it has been 4 months.

Pros: Cheap, looks good. No one will notice if you take the time to do it right.

Cons: As others have stated this stuff smells to high heaven.

Tips: I cant stress enough to use a proper respirator. I did and I wouldn't have been able to stand it with out. Use a small roller made for bathroom paint. PREP PREP PREP... I mean clean, sand, sand and clean... Ventilate or leave the house.

One last tip... I was able to finish the entire tub with 3 coats and I still had a 1/3 of a can left. I would save some (do this before you mix it in separate containers. Once mixed it will harden you can not put the lid on it) just in case you need to touch up a chip.
