Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rust-Oleum 7860519 Tub And Tile Refinishing 2-Part Kit, White

Customer Review: It does what it is says..
Summary: 5 Stars

As long as you take your prep work seriously, which is not a lot but still somewhat time consuming, you will be pleased with the results. I had to cover an 85 year old tub and tiles that were painted with regular high gloss paint, what a PITA it was to clean off years on paint and decades of filth. I couldn't be happier with the results.

It has a texture to it that is somewhat slippery when wet, so be careful. Also the smell is strong, really strong. Wear a mask. One can was enough for the job, but I went away for a week and the can was dried solid. I ended up doing seven coats in 3 days to get everything the way I like it. One word of advice (beyond your following the manufacturing instructions) is cut in on the corners and around the drain, then use a wide roller to do all the big areas - just like painting any wall. Buy as many disposable brushes and rollers as you plan on coats, too. They can't be cleaned after use, I tried.

Customer Review: Looks good so far

I can't comment on durability yet, which is probably most important. It ended up looking nice, new, and fresh. It did seem to take on an even glossier sheen after a couple days of curing. Potentially helpful notes:

- I used 3 kits to do 2-3 coats on a fiberglass tub/shower surround...of course surface prep is vital
- odor cannot be underestimated, I used a mask and goggles (my eyes sting even with latex), I would be sure I knew the best strategy for ventilation before I started
- per instructions, cleanup with lacquer thinner...worked well for brushes between coats at least
- the foam roller I started with fell apart, switched to "good" woven roller and "good" brushes
- paint starts out watery but thickens to a more usuable consistency fairly quickly....rather quickly when I poured it into a pan for roller...think the job through and have everything ready, maybe including backup stuff too

Customer Review: Good stuff but don't rush through

I have used the product a few times and have found it is better to apply light coatings and let dry instead of the prescribed two coatings with a one hour wait between the two coating on the box. I did not mix contents all at once and instead split up into four distinct sets and mixed each one right before applying. I also let each coating dry for one day and lightly wet sanded each coating before I applied another coating. It is very important to remove any sanding residue after sanding and make sure surface is very dry before applying another coat. If you apply too much at once coating will bubble and you will need to start over. I also used brand new rollers for each application. Too difficult to work with one and clean each time - your time is worth more as the rollers are not easy to clean. I have found this application works best. Yes, it takes much more time but has served me well over time.

Customer Review: professional look
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading all the reviews I took on the job very seriously! First, I prepped the bath very meticulously taking all reviews into consideration. I then taped off the bath & mixed the two part paint/activator. Once I began rolling it was very easy and went on smoothly. The only recommendation I have is that if you use the sponge rollers like I did, change rollers half way through the job because the paint tends to disintegrate the sponge and will leave tiny bits within the paint. Apply second coat after about an hour or two but do not try and give it a third coat the next day (the paint is very thick on the second day and will not roll or brush on smoothly). Live and learn but most of all read the reviews for this product. The finish looks professionally done! No chipping as of yet but it has only been two weeks; however, the bath is 30 something years old and it looks new!I would recommend this product!

Customer Review: Looks great - hope it lasts
Summary: 4 Stars

I paid a professional $250.00 to apply a similar product to my kitchen sink. It began to crack and bubble within the first year. The company came and repaired it, but I finally tired of the hassle and removed their finish. That was actually the most difficult part of this project. I cleaned the sink with TSP and the Lime Away and sanded it as directed. The first two coats did not look great, so I ended up putting four coats on the sink and it looks very nice. I mixed half the solution for the first two coats and had to mix the remainder for the last two coats. No matter how carefully you cover and wrap it the product can only be preserved for a short time once the two solutions are mixed. The package says you can clean brushes with alcohol, but it didn't work for me. I applied this about a month ago and it still looks good, but I do use a plastic dish-pan inside the sink for washing dishes.
