Customer Review: Great, if you're lucky.

I bought one new and was more than happy with both the air velocity and volume for the price. HOWEVER, starting was not always easy, and after a little less than two years the motor started feeling a little loose in the casing. Turns out at two of the four mounting locations, the motor housing had cracked off. I don't remember dropping or otherwise abusing the tool, and I did notice another review mentioned a cracked housing, so I guess you have to remember you get what you pay for and hope. On the other hand, it hardly seems to be a common issue, and frankly, based on its performance to that point, I'm still considering buying another one. An ambivalent recommendation: good performance and features for the price, but...
Okay, I decided to go with a refurb. Took about a dozen pulls to start the first time, had a bit of a metal-on-metal sound to it until it finally warmed up and made it up to speed. Next day out, more like 15 pulls, then, just before I was to finish, it seized. Can't ship stuff back with gasoline in 'em (least you're not supposed to), so down to the repair shop. "Running about two weeks, assuming we can get the parts." I pointed out that it was obviously going to cost Ryobi more to have them rebuild it than I had paid for it in the first place; he told me that's the way they want it done. Also told me, and this is hearsay that I haven't tried to verify, that this line was bought by MTD and they're now essentially another Homelite product, not the quality of the past (although I have a Homelite trimmer/tiller/edger/blower that's running strong after a half dozen years). Meanwhile I'm without a blower at the time I need it most, and the leaves keep piling and piling up. Guy at the shop also told me, buy a decent quality one and they last forever, these are very hit and miss; if you're lucky great, otherwise...
Under the category of just asking, how come there are so many of these available as refurbs?
Here I go again. Working with the refurb, the choke lever fell off, got lost (it's only held in by a pin in plastic), took a while before I got around to pulling apart my first one for the replacement parts (I rarely throw anything out), installed it, but couldn't get the engine to run for more than a minute or two. Drained the fuel into the afore mentioned Homelite with its inefficient blower attachment and ran that for awhile while the the carburetter cleaner evaporated from the Ryobi. Refilled it with freshly mixed fuel, ran well for a while. It sputtered as if out of gas much sooner than expected--and in fact there was still fuel in the tank. Turns out there was a pinhole in the delivery tube. Fortunately it was close enough to the end that I could cut below it, pull the tube from the tank a bit and still draw fuel. This thing has become more of a hobby than a tool. When it's working, it blows well, but I can't recommend it.
