Tools and Hardware Reviews of Factory Reconditioned Ryobi ZR08510 25.4cc Gas-Powered Variable-Speed Hand-Held Blower/Vacuum/MulcherCustomer Review: Excellent Product!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Today is 11/11/09--Used Ryobi Blower/Vac for the first time yesterday-11/10/09. Worked perfectly for first use--started on second pull of cord--ran flawlessly for a total of six hours straight. Ran out of gas three times--refilled and started right up after running hot. I don't know why I have seen some negative feedback about starting and continuous running--if you mix the gas ratio correctly and follow the starting instructions--it works perfectly. Used it for blowing leaves, then vacuuming them up and everything went as expected. I have faith in the brand name and have several Ryobi products, including a table saw, power miter saw, jig saw, and power drill--none of which has let me down so far. This is my first Ryobi "reconditioned purchase" and it seems to be a smart move saving the extra money over brand new. My unit had very low, if any, usage--it works as good as new and has no visible flaws. All attachments were there and were easy to snap on and remove to change function from blowing to vacuuming. Easy to understand instruction manual, also. I don't know how this product will hold up over the long haul, but for now, it's great--good power to blow and vacuum leaves. The only two negatives I can think of is high gasoline consumption (which I've heard is the case with many other brands also) and it seems to run very hot when vacuuming and mulching leaves.
Review Edit: (9/8/2010) I've had this bad boy for nearly a year now and it still works flawlessly. Everything I said about this product in my first review still holds true. It's an excellent product at a great price. Anyone needing a gas powered blower/mulcher would be a fool not to buy this one!!
Customer Review: Reconditioned Ryobi Blower/Vacuum & Mulcher Summary: 2 Stars
Shipment arrived faster than expected, but I was very disappointed in the packaging. All of the pieces were loose in the box with only 2 paper size sheets of bubble wrap. The motor assembly had punched a hole in the shipping box, but I did not find any evidence of damage, and all the parts were there.
Starting was incredibly difficult every time. At first I thought it would never run after 5 minutes of priming and pulling. I looked for a cause and found out the choke was sticking in the on position. The choke assembly was very stiff and did not return to a normal running condition after moving the lever that engages it. I ended up moving it to the run condition with my finger.
Once I got it running, I found that the tube that mounts to the main motor easily falls off during use. The tubes do not lock in place, and when they come off it kills the engine. Starting it back up was a chore because I had to choke it to get it to start, and then had to deal with the sticking choke.
The manufacturer should be ashamed of themselves. I did not bother to complain because they likely would not care given the condition of this item. I will repair the choke myself so that the machine can be used as it is intended to be.
Needless to say, I am very disappointed in the packaging and poor quality. This machine is very difficult to use and I would not recommend it to anyone.
Customer Review: This is a good deal Summary: 5 Stars
It came in about a week (from CPO in Georgia). It looks nearly new, not used. It started on the third pull. It blew leaves, as advertised.
It is not the most powerful, and neither is it the lightest weight unit. However, at $90 delivered, it is a good compromise for my small yard with lots of oaks. We had wind and rain in the week I waited for it to arrive, so the leaves were thick and wet. The unit is adequate for my needs.
I put a shoulder strap on it from a duffle bag. This helped me to use it for two hours straight. My hands got a little numb/tingly, but that is to be expected from any two-cycle engine you carry around. Maybe wearing gloves would help a little.
I did not care much for the blower tube. I am barely six feet tall, but the tubes seemed short. I was able to attach the end piece from the Echo blower I had fried two weeks earlier, and that worked well.
I have not seen anything for the price that seems to be as good a blower as this. If anything, I might want more power, but then I would want a backpack or wheels, because it would probably weigh more. And it would cost more than twice as much.
As for it being reconditioned, I have no doubt that it is as good as new. No reservations, a solid recommendation.
Customer Review: please don't waste your money Summary: 1 Stars
A buddy had a Craftsman leaf vacuum that I borrowed two years ago, and it was great. After I gave it back, I hopped online and found this Ryobi that I thought would be a great deal. The unit was ergonomically harder to use (very awkward to hold in vacuum mode and tired my arms out quickly) but it got the job done. Over the last two years, the unit developed an increasing list of problems:
* vacuum tubes fall off
* unit does not run once fuel tank is half empty (bad fuel pickup)
* safety trigger on fan guard stopped working, had to shim with a blob of epoxy
* latch on fan guard door broke
* vacuum bag zipper became difficult to operate
* harder and harder starting
This is in addition to the ergonomic problem that in vacuum mode, the hot exhaust is blowing right onto you. Well, I tried to use it this past weekend, and it refuses to start - period. I spent 30 minutes messing with it, pulled the plug, tried some starting fluid, everything. I've only had it two years, but it's ready for the trash pile. The funny thing is, I've actually USED it less than a dozen times. Please don't buy this thinking it's a good deal. Even at $70, you're wasting your money.
Customer Review: The saga of a Ryobi Gas Blower Summary: 1 Stars
For me, this purchase has been a nightmare. I received the unit the same day that my daughter purchased for me from a local store a comperable re-conditioned Poulan for $65.27. I attempted to return the Ryobi unit to you and I was informed that the unit was not returnable, and so I returned the Poulan to the local store with no problems. On my first attempt to use the Ryobi, it would not start. I took the unit to the local authorized dealer, and he had to clean and adjust the carburetor. I then used the unit for about one hour, stopped for lunch, after which I attempted to restart the unit. It would not start. I returned the unit to the dealer and three days later I called the dealer and he advised me that the motor was no good had ordered a replacement motor. To date I am still waiting for the unit to be repaired, during a period of time when I need it most. I feel that Amazon has some responsibility in this matter. When I purchased the unit, nowheres on the order was it specified that the unit was not returnable. Had I known, I would not have purchased the unit. Further, I assumed that Amazon provided quality goods, this was not and sadly, I paid a premium price for a piece of junk.
