Tools and Hardware Reviews of Emergency Fire Starter

Customer Review: Not Bad
Summary: 4 Stars

These firestarters arent my first choice, but i do carry them with me in my survival pack. On my person everytime i leave the house is one of these on a piece of paracord that i wear around my neck: Ultimate Survival Technologies StrikeForce Fire Starter. The sparks that come off the block type of firestarter arent nearly as hot as the StrikeForce. Both work well, the block type takes a bit more practice and you have to be picky about the tinder your trying to spark up. I got quite a few of both, more of the block type in fact, thrown in buckets and totes with the rest of my gear. The few i carry with me have the "chain" removed and paracord put in its place.

Customer Review: Works great and as intended
Summary: 4 Stars

This works great and very well for its price. Its small and compact and packs a wallop. I like that you can use one side to make shavings (in situations where you can't find good tinder). The magnesium rod itself works very well. Out of the box I created a fire with just one strike.

The striker / saw wasn't very useful at all. I suppose in a situation where you don't have a knife (lost one, for instance), the striker would be fine. But, I compared it with a quartz that I found in the woods. The quartz worked better. I completely broke the chain that its attached to, when I accidentally got a small branch lodged in between the loop, in a jump. I ended up just taking the rod and shaving combo, and leaving the striker and loop at home.

Customer Review: Magnesium firestarter
Summary: 4 Stars

This is not the easiest way to start a fire, but that's probably why it's called an "emergency fire starter". It is small and lightweight, and completely unaffected by water- it will start a fire under almost any condition. The downside is that it takes a considerable amount of effort to scrape a pile of magnesium shavings large enough to actually start a fire. The striker is also a pain to use because it's difficult to produce a shower of sparks large enough to ignite the magnesium. So... Although it wouldn't be my first choice for making fire, it certainly is worth having in an emergency situation because it's compact, lightweight, indestructable, and completely waterproof.

Customer Review: Decent fire starter
Summary: 3 Stars

Scraping the magnesium off is very tedious. My son and I scraped some onto some dry leaves for probably 10 minutes and only got a tiny, 2 second flame out of the magnesium because it doesn't seem to come off very well.

The chain holding the scraper is also too short. My son broke it after about 10 minutes. He put a longer chain on it (hey, THAT's where his ceiling fan chain went!!) and that was better because it allowed him to get a better stroke on the magnesium. He found that using cotton balls and the striker was a much more efficient means of starting a fire. He simply couldn't get one going with the little magnesium that he could get scraped off.

Customer Review: Works as nice as can be expected
Summary: 4 Stars

It is not as easy as you might think but these magnesium strips works as good as any. It's pretty much exccellent quality. Plus you can use the flint like a firesteel if you have other tinder on hand. It works great with cotton balls or dryer lint without even needing any magnesium. This product works exactly as advertised. It's a magnesium bar, a piece of flint, and a striker/scraper tool (knife, etc.). That's all it is, and that's all you need to get a fire going. It takes some patience to get a proper sized pile of shavings, but if you get a good little pile and have some dry tinder and kindling nearby, you should be able to make a fire if you work hard at it.
