Tools and Hardware Reviews of Emergency Fire Starter

Customer Review: Works
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm not going to repeat what people have already said as far as how to use the product. If you use enough shavings, you will get a fire. I took one on a camping trip once to see how it worked. On my second try, I ignited the pile of pine needles and dry leaves, and created a great camp fire. The first attempt failed because I did not use enough shavings. You do have to get through the protective layer, and the flint will wear down if you use it a lot. Once your shavings pile is large enough, a couple quick flicks on the flint will get it started. Worth the few bucks to have a back-up fire source.

Customer Review: You'll freeze before you get warm

I bought these magnesium bars with flints in the past and I liked them. COGHLANS was my brand of choice. This time I decided to save a couple of bucks. big mistake. this is the worst one I have bought yet. The magnesium does not not scrape off like others do. a little bit of water and good luck starting a fire. When I scrape it it scrapes off in ti dust. And this is trying to scrape it with the scraper provided, My bowie and my benchmade knife. DO NOT BUY IT IS WORTHLESS. Buy stuff that is proven. We started a fire with a bow drill before I could get this to light. Buy COGHLANS. You wont regret it.

Customer Review: Handy and good for the price

I bought this along with the Swedish Firesteel to test them out. I like this product due to the fact that you can shave the magnesium off and use it to start the tender, however I found that the flint was difficult to use and did not put off much spark. It did spark, though. The swedish firesteel throws of a much bigger and hotter spark and was much easier to use, however if you do not have good tender it doesn't matter much. I think that having both of them together is good and they are both are a relatively inexpensive purchase if you consider how valuable they are when needed.

Customer Review: I like the FireSteel better
Summary: 4 Stars

OK, I bought two of these and and two of the FireSteel fire starters. Ive used both in controlled conditions and the FireSteel far exceeds this. The tinder caught quicker and easier with the FireSteel, but those are magnesium sparks. A LOT hotter than the flint ones that this set produces. I will use the magnesium on these to make my shavings in the future with the FireSteel producing the igniting spark, that way if I ever end up in a SHTF scenario, I should get maximum benefit from both products. And before anybody asks, I have removed the coating trying to get my results.

Customer Review: Not bad but not a good purchase.
Summary: 2 Stars

I would absolutely welcome this product if I were stranded in a survival situation with no other way to start a fire.

It will, with enough effort, start a fire.

However, I also own a Light My Fire firesteel and the comparison is marked. We're talking about six bucks difference for something that is an important bit of kit.

I would buy one of these if you need a back up to throw in your pack for some sort of apocalyptic disaster where the magnesium may help. For general firestarting, the Light My Fire is far superior and preferred.
