Tools and Hardware Reviews of Emergency Fire StarterCustomer Review: For under 5 bucks, you can't go wrong. Summary: 5 Stars
This product works exactly as advertised. It's a magnesium bar, a piece of flint, and a striker/scraper tool. That's all it is, and that's all you need to get a fire going. It takes some patience to get a proper sized pile of shavings, but if you get a good little pile and have some dry tinder and kindling nearby, you WILL be able to make a fire. It's pretty much dummy-proof. Plus you can use the flint like a firesteel if you have other tinder on hand. It works great with cotton balls or dryer lint without even needing any magnesium.
Customer Review: A cool toy, and a good addition to a nuclear apocalypse survival kit! Summary: 4 Stars
Well it is a bar of magnesium, which burns hot and ignites easily when scraped into fine shavings, and a rod of special alloy which produces sparks when scraped with steel. All conveniently packaged together.
To tell the truth, a cheap disposable lighter is much more practical and far easier to use, but this thing will work a thousand years after a nuclear war.
I estimate it would start just as many fires as a disposable lighter would on its gas supply, but it is certainly more fun and outdoorsy!
Customer Review: Not Magnesium Summary: 1 Stars
I have no clue what this stuff is, but it is not flamable. My friend told me the difference between the military issue and these cheap knockoffs. After laughing at him he bet me that this stuff wouldn't light in a fire, let alone with a spark. So I took the bet and tossed my firestarter into a campfire. About 20 minutes later (which seemed like an eternity as everyone was laughing), it finally started on fire. Cheap Chinese knockoff. I bought 6 of these things and now I know why I couldn't light a fire if my life depended on it.
Customer Review: Great at starting fires, as well as slicing your hand Summary: 3 Stars
First off, the product works. The blade shaves the magn. and the flint supplies ample amount of spark. Starting a small fire with twigs and paper was easy. A great tool in an emergency situation. I would not use it for just starting a normal fire when i have matches/lighter, the little white cubes or simple charcol fluid.
HOWEVER, the block and blade (sharp serrated edge) are so small when gripping it and trying to scrape or light, you can easily slice your thumb/hand.
Bit it works ... FIRE! .... FIRE! ... FIRE!
Customer Review: Almost Worthless Summary: 1 Stars
I don't understand all the glowing reviews. The little "saw" you get with this product can't produce anything more than tiny specks of magnesium. I was expecting easily-cut flakes. It's also small and pretty flimsy, and is attached by a tiny chain which means you have to separate the saw from the other piece to use the thing. It took me about fifty strikes to ignite a piece of tissue, and the saw blade cut into my forefinger in the process. There has to be something better out there.
