Customer Review: Perfectly acceptable, but not ideal

I bought this as a backup item to go in my survival/camping bag. I normally carry some form of lighter with me into the backwoods, but lighters can and do occasionally fail due to mechanics, fuel and damage. This fit the bill. It makes sparks and it's cheap, two prerequisites for me. As far as that goes, it's hard to complain much.
But the attached striker is almost completely worthless. It takes a good bit of practice and patience to make it work. As another reviewer stated, the instructions are also bad. Shaving bits of this into a pile is not the way to make it work. The best way is to take the blade of a knife (even the back of some blades) and strike down the fire rod to make sparks. Using your own knife, it works far more effectively than with the striker. Finally, worth noting, the rod is thin in diameter and won't last as long as a Gobspark or another thick, brand-name rod. It also came out of the handle where it was apparently held by cheap glue. I dotted it with better glue and hammered it back in and it's better.
I am glad I have it and rate it as at least average in dollar-for-dollar performance. But it's not as nice as some other steels out there. And as such, it's not as expensive either. Be prepared for the tradeoff. That said, I feel confident with a little tinder and a knife, I can have fire as long as I have this starter and that, in the end, is the point.
