As for brightness this product was pretty amazing, it lights up foodstains and is a great help when trying to find small plastic translucent objects in thick carpet. It also almost instantly 'recharges' glow-in-the-dark products.
I ordered this product with the aim of breaking out the LED's to use in a project of my own, for this purpose, the torchlight is not suitable; the torchlight exists out of four parts; a backpart made out of metal with a soft plastic/rubbery covering that is the on/off switch, a middle part that is basicly a metal tube with threading on both parts, a cylindrical battery holder that holds 3 AAA batteries and easily slides into the middle tube part (it's shaped more or less like a D-battery, but the voltage between the pins is +/-4.5V, since the 3 AAA batteries are switched serial. and a front part that holds the actual torchlight. The frontpart is very sturdy and the electronics are firmly embedded in it.
The LED's aren't easily accessible (they are held on a threaded part that's screwed into the 'nut'-shaped covering, you seem to be able to unscrew them if you posess a special key with 3 points though, but I haven't seen those for sale in my area).
The torchlight would seem more or less waterproof (containing O-rings at the joints between the parts), apart from the fact that the plastic window in front of the LED's isn't tightly fit, so I certainly wouldn't submerge it.
