Customer Review: Sog Seal Pup Elite

This review is for seal pup elite. This is not a user's review, just general impressions. The knife came with a very utilitarian nylon sheath. The pros of this sheath is that it has large front pocket which can be used to store a sharpening stone. The knife itself is very nice. It is very light and seems durable. The handle fits the hand well and is comfortable. It is also checkered and under prolonged use can be abrasive. Not a big deal. The handle material is very durable and I prefer it to rubber. The blade shape is bowie style that tapers to the top of the spine. I must say that I prefer a traditional drop-point blade shape but I realize that SOG wanted to keep the knife light so again, fair enough. The steel is AUS-8, a decent, high carbon stainless. I would rather have a plain tough carbon steel like 1095, 5160, etc.. but this is a seal knife meaning that the steel may be used around saltwater a lot therefore needs to be stainless. The edge is very well ground and is very sharp. The edge is thicker than on the previous version of seal pup. I prefer the thicker edge as it's tougher and stronger. Should stand up to hard use but not abuse. What I really like is the jimping on the spine. It can be used for vriety of things liket sawing, notching, etc.. I wish more knives would have this feature. The knife is made in Taiwan. While I would rather see it being made in USA or Japan, as long as the quality is there, I don't really mind. The retail price is steep but for what it costs here on Amazon, it's a good deal. I even got it for less than that second hand NIB. This is a solid yet light knife that I think I will enjoy using.
