Tools and Hardware Reviews of Safer Brand 5170B Ant and Crawling Insect Killer 4 Pound bagCustomer Review: Was skeptical, but now I'm sold... Summary: 4 Stars
I live in North Florida and last season our entire neighborhood was overrun with fleas. So, this year, I was not looking forward to another season of rolling up my pants legs before heading out to the car. I researched like crazy and had read about DE but have been very skeptical. Then, about two weeks ago, the temp hit 80 degrees and fleas took over my garage. I couldn't do laundry but that a dozen of the littles SOBs would swarm my legs.
Last night I arrived home from work and needed to go into the garage, but had a sinking feeling, knowing what awaited me. Hartz has a spray that works really well, but it is a poison and I can't soak everything in it. So, I hopped back into the car and drove to Home Depot. I returned home and readied myself: shorts, tank top, flip flops and with a flour sifter in hand, I marched in. They attacked me immediately. With one hand I was bent over dusting the floor and with the other I was scraping off the little buggers. I know it says that it can take up to 48 hours to work but I was so curious that I attempted to martyr myself for the cause this morning and dared to head out into the garage and act as guinea pig.
And there I stood.
And stood.
And not a SINGLE FLEA hopped on.
I switched locations. Still, none.
I switched locations again. Still, none.
I don't know if it's just good luck the first time out and whether it will work as well in other areas but I am genuinely excited to try it further. In fact, I'm going to drag out my lawn spreader (the drop type) and do my entire yard. And, I'm going to sprinkle it in doorways and window sills.
If this stuff works, I'll be spreading the word around my neighborhood like wildfire!
Customer Review: This is a SAFE product, as long as you avoid breathing in the powder Summary: 4 Stars
The reviewer who said this was not eco-friendly does not know what they are talking about. The warning on the bag does not say it is "hazardous to humans and animals," instead, it lists specific "hazards" which include only its abrasive properties (what kills the insects). Basically you should avoid getting it in your eye or breathing it in while spreading it. The substance is not toxic but it can cause physical damage to your lungs and eye because of its abrasive properties.
The 22% patented baits are "inert, food-grade" baits to attract the insects. There is nothing toxic about them. A simple call to the manufacturer would have cleared this up. The other reviewer should not have just assumed that the other ingredients were toxic? What would be the point of adding toxins to a natural product for killing insects? The Concern DE is actually made by the same company.
I gave this 4 out of 5 because we just put it down yesterday. I am sure it will work after what I've read about DE. It doesn't get a 5 because you have to be so careful not to breathe the powder, not just when you put it down but when you go to vacuum it up too. Always use a dust mask. There is another, very expensive product, out there that is not supposed to be as powdery (fleabusters) but we didn't want to spend the money when DE was an option.
Whatever you do, don't use the DE used in pools! It's very dangerous as the DE has been heated to change its chemical composition and the structure of the DE.
Customer Review: really dries my skin Summary: 3 Stars
It has worked on a large number of the pest problems in the house. Did not help as much with the flea problem, but probably cut their infestation in half. The dogs just keep bringing in new roommates. Maybe I need to keep adding it to the doggy door entry/exit. This year, with the large amount of rain that Texas is getting, the flea and mosquitoes are horrific. I have noticed, even weeks later, that the bugs in this old house are just turning up dead. The first week I used it on everything including the dogs and cat, brushed into the carpet fibers, between the hardwood slats in the floor, on the mattresses under the sheets and on my garden. Oh, I also put some around the outdoor trash cans, it cut down on the ants! With the rain almost every day, it did not help much in the garden. I could not handle it on my pets. I had to bathe them because petting them dried my skin. I did feed them some in canned food and they did not even notice it was there. I'm confident it will help rid any internal pest! I like the fact that this stuff is safe. Even though it tends to dry my skin, I have no fear of putting my hands down in the soft talc like dust. The 3.6 lbs bucket was more than enough for this years needs.
Customer Review: Excellent and Safe Pest Control Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this product as a inside the home pest control. I did not want to hire a professional. I sprinkled this stuff where the carpet meets the walls and around vents, doors, and outlets. A couple of days later I found insects of all types dead in random places. I simply vacuumed them up. It does not kill them immediately but sure enough should an insect come in contact with it, it is an automatic death sentence. I only used a tiny bit for a rather large bedroom. This stuff is visible on carpet but vacuums up easily leaving no trace. I find this product much more beneficial compared to insecticides that are potentially health hazards.
Customer Review: Not "Eco-friendly" -- Hazardous to Humans and Pets! Summary: 1 Stars
This item was purchased with the thinking that maybe the "bait" was like the bran meal some bio-controls contain. However, upon the items arrival, the toxicity of the product was revealed. "Hazardous to Humans and domestic animals". It states on the bag that it is OMRI listed. However, 22% of the product is "other", i.e., "THE BAIT".
I want to know is this 22% 'other'? This item will NOT go into my garden which is home to many beneficial insects, birds, and toads and a playroom for our pet rabbit.
Please purchase Concern's 100% Diatomaceous Earth instead. You'll know for certain that it is "eco-friendly".
