Tools and Hardware Reviews of Magna Sand and Kleen MT 800 J Hand Sander SystemCustomer Review: Great customer service, and it works great too! Summary: 5 Stars
I recently had my garage insulated with blown in insulation. This required the cutting of over 140 2" diameter holes in the sheetrock in order to insert the nozzle of the insulation machine. Plus, there were several larger holes left from electrical and A/C work, so I had a lot of patching and sanding to do. I wanted to minimize the drywall dust because of the expensive precision metalworking machines in the garage.
I ordered the 800 J system from Amazon, and it arrived very quickly. However, when I started to assemble it to use it one Saturday, I discovered the hand sanding pad was missing. Bummer! I had to wait till Monday morning to contact the makers of the system, Magna, but when I explained what happened, they shipped one out to me immediately. It arrived just a couple of days later, in time for the weekend. No charge to me for shipping or anything!
I finally used it this weekend. It worked great; there was NO visible drywall dust on the floor! There was just a little bit on top of a workbench, but the workbench got a bit dusty because I had to reach across it to sand the patches on the wall, so I wasn't always keeping the sanding pad flat against the wall.
Using it is a bit of a workout because of the suction making the sanding process just a bit harder. Plus, holding up the sanding head and the weight of the hose above my head to do the holes at the top of the walls is a good upper body work out if you are not used to it. I imagine the pole sander by Magna would have made this job very easy, but since I don't intend to do anymore drywall work if I can possible avoid it, I did not feel the need to spend the extra money. It would have saved me about 25 trips up and down the step ladder though.
I did about half of the job before I emptied out the bucket, and changed my sanding screen. I was amazed at how much dust there was in the bottom of the bucket, and how much foamy dust there was in the water itself.
At no time did I feel the need to wear a dust mask, and found no dust in my nose or in my eyes afterwards.
It does whistle like a banshee, and in a confined garage, I'm sure that would lead to hearing damage. But, I used hearing protection (full ear-enclosing) Peltor ear muffs. I advise anyone using this system to use full ear covering hearing protection. It makes the process a lot more tolerable. The whistling sometimes would subside a bit, but it never went away permanently while using the machine. My family in the house said they could hear it very plainly. It was loud enough that I cannot imagine using it without hearing protection.
