Tools and Hardware Reviews of Schlage BE365VPLY505 Plymouth Keypad Deadbolt, Bright BrassCustomer Review: Great when it works but its not working most of the time - updated review Summary: 4 Stars
We bought this lock new from Amazon and received it 2 months ago. It worked fine for the first couple weeks then would stop working unless the battery was disconnected and reconnected which seemed to reset it. It would work for a couple times and then go back to the 'stuck' state where it can not be unlocked if it was in a locked state, even with the physical key provided as a backup. If it was unlocked when it went into the bad state it would not lock, again even with the physical key. We've tried several new batteries to no avail so the unit seems defective.
I really liked this lock when it worked. My advice would be to make a backup plan in case you have a problem with this lock, like keeping the old key lock around to re-install if this lock breaks and having at least one other door you can get in with a regular old key.
Follow-up: Schlage sent us a replacement lock which has been working great for several months now.
Customer Review: Should have gotten one long ago. Summary: 5 Stars
I selected this version of the keypad lock because it did not use a little electric motor to move the bolt. I felt that that motor might wear out or get effected by weather (it gets COLD in northern Illinois). The Schlage uses the keypad to engage a manual turned hand key, similar to the way you lock a deadbolt inside. This hand turned method is much better than the battery powered motor in my case because the door has a soft weather stripping. The door must be pulled to compress the weatherstrip before the bolt will slide into place.
A little bonus, the keypad lights up.
Installation was fine, but then again I enjoy that type of thing. It came already programmed with two codes and I did not bother to change them or add others. Very sturdy materials, easy to use, simple to operate and looks like it will last. Of the similar options this has all the features I wanted.
Recommended.
Customer Review: Mostly good. A few things that make you go Hmmm. Summary: 4 Stars
Schlage got it right with the concept of an electronic lock that requires you to physically twist the knob. Our previous electronic door lock would frequently stick when the batteries were low or the batteries would pop out of their holder, if the door was accidentally slammed shut and make the door lock inoperable. This unit uses a 9 V battery that stays securely in place and is only responsible for the electronic signal that allows you to manually unlock the door. This way the battery lasts a lot longer as well.
I do have issue with the layout of the numbers. I think they are awkwardly placed depending on the code you choose. An standard 3x3 numeric type setup would have been better. Also it appears you must punch in your code to lock the door. I would think a single button lock feature would be more convenient. Perhaps I need to read the instructions more carefully.
Customer Review: Clever Idea in an Electronic Lock Summary: 5 Stars
Works as advertised, and has a couple of fun features not mentioned overtly :
If the lock is open, you can set the dead-bolt from the outside of your house by pushing the "Schlage" button in the top center of the keypad, giving you about 15 seconds to set the lock.
When locked, the Schlage button turns on the full keypad illumination in a really cool blue back-lighting, surely a great help at night.
And you will need a 2 1/8" hole in your door to properly install. Imagine my surprise when it didn't fit my 2" hole despite the package saying it would fit all "standard" deadbolt installations.
Still, a very worth-while purchase and the value is there if you want a lock which looks high-tech, installs fairly easy, and cannot be "bumped" without knowing the code. Looks, security, and strength in one brassy package. I like.
Customer Review: Love this Lock Summary: 5 Stars
When it arrived- I was a little worried that it would fit with my storm door- but it fits without any problem. I installed this in about 30 minutes- by myself- without any problem. I had a little bit of trouble reprogramming it to a personalized pin number- but gave the 800 number a call- got an actual human that spoke English... well... :-) - he said his name was Nick and I actually think it probably was. He was very helpful- I had to make a minor adjustment in the lock- he walked me thru the steps and then I was able to program it without any problem. It was missing one of the finishing screws that went to the back cover- but I called Schlage (Nick) and they said they would mail me the missing screw. I installed this by myself- didn't have to wait on my husband to do it- without any prior lock installation experience and I LOVE how convienient it is already.
