Tools and Hardware Reviews of AquaFresh WF285 Refrigerator Replacement Filter

Customer Review: Bad Filter! Defective Design!! Causes Floods!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

We have been frustrated for many months with random floods from our Whirlpool Gold Side-By-Side Refrigerator. I was not able to pinpoint the issue, until now! These generic AquaFresh Replacements are not identical in design. I read through ever Appliance repair Forum and checked the typical things. The Water Inlet Valve and the Defrost Drain. Everything was fine; so I bought a new Filter Housing for over $55 and as bad luck would have it... another leak! (Thanks AquaFresh!)

I replaced it with a genuine PUR Whirlpool and never had a problem. I also used the genuine Whirlpool/KitchenAid and never had a problem. However, while trying to save a few bucks BOTH the WF285's did the same thing. Their is a "hammer effect" when the water valves open and close. The resulting pressure on the filter causes it to push back just far enough for water to escape the O ring seals.

I might also mention I seriously doubt these filters even worked? The water still had an odor and like everyone else mentioned.. the carbon particles will be there for months. I spent many gallons "flushing" the filter, but weeks later the black dust was still present. The other Filters do not produce anything in even the first cup. In this case, you DON'T even get what you pay for. Saving a few dollars on a filter cost me way more in damaged hardwood floors and unecessary repair parts. Seriously, I don't write too many reviews, but I had to on this one! I hope I can help as many folks as possible to avoid the disaster we endured.

Customer Review: Saving money with a cheaper brand didn't pay off
Summary: 1 Stars

Like DigitalMan's review, I too decided to try to save some money and get the cheaper AquaFresh brand filter. I ordered a 3-pack in October 2008 from another online vendor for about $76 (about the cost of 2 by Pur). I also noticed the black particulates (maybe charcoal?) when installing the first filter. I ran several gallons of water through it (much more than is recommended) and it seemed to clear up, although I forgot to check later on. Today, I installed the second one and I'm not going to try the third. I must have run about 4 gallons of water through the line. After noticing some particulates in the water of the large gallon pitcher I was using, I switched between tap water and the refrigerator multiple times using a wine glass, allowing for the air bubbles to clear out. The tap water was clear, but the water coming from the Aquafresh filter had black particulates and a few white fibers as well. It may not be harmful (who knows), but the Kenmore/Pur brand filters I used before never had that problem. I'm going to order the more expensive brand filters again and will drink pure Schuylkill Punch (what we call the tap water in southeastern Pennsylvania) until the new filters come. I still believe that many times you CAN save money by shopping around for a cheaper brand with equal or better quality, but in this case that's not my experience which is why I'm taking the time to write this review.

Customer Review: Purchased 3, 2 Broke.... Almost Disaster
Summary: 1 Stars

I have purchased 3 of these filters for my fridge. The first time I purchased 2 at one time so I could have a backup. 1 day after installing the first one, the plastic part of the filter broke and water QUICKLY started leaking from the filter onto the floor. I figured it was just a 1 in a million thing and put the other filter in. It worked fine for the 3 months until my little light told me it was time to order a new one. I ordered one and replaced the filter. One week later, pop, the plastic seal broke yet again and water again was all over my floor. I was very, very lucky to be at home and in the kitchen BOTH times they broke, otherwise I would have come home to a flooded house as the water comes out at full force. I would recommend spending the extra money for a different filter. I know I will from now on.........

Customer Review: Cheap Chinese replacement: Get what you pay for
Summary: 1 Stars

Tried this product along with the PUR replacement and the original: Saved a few bucks; at the time I was not aware that I was buying a Chinese product needless to say the filter failed after only a couple of weeks, water tasted awful and smelled. having owned several refrigerators that use this type of filter, it was a learning experience. Do not buy this product, its not worth the 20$ not even $5 spend a little more and get the OEM parts work great and last 5-8 months.

Customer Review: good product for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

Received quickly. Fit tight with no leaking. Provided clean, clear tasting water right away. I've been using these filters for several years while changing every 6 months. Two years ago I had a filter leak because I didn't screw all the way in. Now they provide a small amount of lubricant to place on the O-ring to allow easier placement and a better seal.
