My wife and I got this unit to cover the basic must have documents/keep sakes: birth certificate, passports, wedding photo DVDs, SS cards, car title. Although you can't fit a 8.5x11" sheet in there, most of these items are foldable or small enough to fit. It's great that they rate it to protect flash keys/DVDs for up to 30 minutes in heat. Also, opening hinge is 3" up, so despite not being waterproof, if you store on the floor even apartment sprinklers would hopefully not get in.Customer Review: SentrySafe 500 Fire Safe

This item was the perfect size and weight for what I was looking for, it was not too bulky. It still has fire protection but its smaller than the other Sentry Fire chests that are available, while still providing adequate storage space for smaller Items. Safe has a quality lock for product its size and it latches very securely. I am very satisfied with my purchase. The only disadvantage with this size fire safe is that it has no handle. How do you really know a safe works unless you've had a fire? Thank God that hasn't happened to us. This safe is small and functional. Only has room for paper and maybe some jewelry. I've got my passport, car title, birth certificates etc inside. Based on an earlier review I put everything in a ziplock bag in case of too much water damage.
Two small keys accompany it, I've just got to remember where I've put them.

It's heavy and big, which means you can fit many important documents inside, like birth certificates, Social Security cards, IDs, cash, wills, life insurance policies, etc. It's fire proof, due to the plastic exterior coated over solid steel and the steel interior. I bought this safe to put inside a larger safe, to provide extra protection for some more fragile items. The lock on this little safe is a joke, which in my case isn't important; not to mention that it could easily be carried off (I'd recommend leaving the key in it if you only keep papers in it...that way a thief won't just take it to open later). It's a good price, but not very large.
