Tools and Hardware Reviews of SentrySafe DS3410 Black Fire-Safe 1.2-Cubic Foot Combination SafeCustomer Review: Seems Solid Summary: 5 Stars
First, it came with 2 large mounting bolts and instructions on where to drill the bottom of the safe. I plan to buy another 6 bolts and secure both the bottom and the back of it to both the floor and wall studs.
I would have preferred a digital but after reading the many lock-out complaints, settled for the combination and the key. It can be locked separately with either or with both the combo and the key. Nice.
Also, it is much heavier than some of the competiting models in this price range. I shopped around. But I could have saved the sales tax if I bought it from Amazon but I also avoided some delivery denting issues by P/U at Home Depot, as it weights 90 pounds.
I did read one review that it was broken into using a crowbar so might not want to keep the family jewels here but it seems as heavy duty as I would expect for a $200 90 pound safe.
It will keep the teenagers out of the pain pills, secure a few back-up USB drives, Passports, other important papers and several laptop computers when we're on vacation.
After being spoiled by the in-room hotel safes, it was just time to get one or two.
Customer Review: This safe almost hit me on the head Summary: 3 Stars
I was walking down the street in the city the other day, minding my own business, and I heard a big wooshing sound from over my head and suddenly an incredibly loud bang right near where I was walking. Stunned, I then realized that just feet from where I was about to walk, this safe had been thrown or dropped from a window in tall building near me and had plummeted to the concrete sidwalk in a violent explosion into the concrete. Just one or two more steps and this safe would have landed on top of my head, splitting me open and splattering me like a tomato. Wow, I couldn't believe it! I looked up and saw an open window about 20 stories above me, and what looked like someone giggling and then quickly ducking out. Someone had deliberately dropped this safe from the 20th floor of a building to try to take me out! I looked at the safe imbedded about 3 feet into the concrete sidewalk and it said "ACME" on the side. Incredibly, the safe had not cracked open. Several years ago it was anvils, and now safes are being dropped on top me. I have a feeling I know who is behind this, and it will be my mission to find out for sure. In the meantime, if you want a very tough and reliable safe, this appears to be your answer.
Customer Review: Good safe, bad packaging Summary: 4 Stars
This safe is pretty nice. It weighs 96 pounds, so you definitely need some support to hold it if you aren't floor mounting it or putting it on some sort of table. This safe is a two stage combination to open (i.e. you have to correctly input the combination via the dial AND use the provided key to open the safe). The instructions didn't say this but it was fairly obvious. Plenty of room inside, with a shelf in the middle. Disappointed it didn't come with some soft foam padding for items like watches and jewelry but that is easily fixed by visiting your local crafts store. I haven't experience the "un-openable" problem people have noticed after a year or two, but that remains to be seen.
My one gripe about this product is the packaging. The original one arrived at my door, very beat up, with dents in the safe and holes ripped into the box. I returned (at Amazon's cost) the original and they overnighted a new one which arrive in good condition, but using the exact same packaging. The box is a flimsy thin cardboard with foam spacers on the four edges of the safe. Nothing is protecting the dial/handle.
Customer Review: Sentry Not Safe Summary: 3 Stars
I needed a tough safe for the expensive vials of [blank] from my prize winning Serbian Elf fox that I use to compete in contests. I use the [blank] to create valuable offspring that are highly prized at shows in Russia. This fit the need.
I found the SentrySafe DS3410 Black Fire-Safe 1.2-Cubic Foot Combination Safe used at a Hardware store. It's a very heavy Safe, so it took me a while to get to the top of my 33rd floor apartment climbing the stairs. A few times I dropped it but it didn't dent.
It stinks inside, probably because of what was put in before I bought it.
I also tested it with stethoscopes, sphygmomanometers, and other diagnostic instruments. It is easy to hear the lock mech. I also set fire to it using oil and it was badly damaged outside but still was usable.
After about a year's worth of use, it was broken into by what seems a high powered blow torch. It might be good for a personal diary, or a US Civil War belt buckle, or a few bags of old coins that you have collected from sidewalks but other than that, it isn't very good against Safe thieves.
Customer Review: Not safe! Summary: 1 Stars
The Sentry safe appears sturdy but they do not last. After several years keeping it indoors in a safe place so the elements would not harm it, it became more and more difficult to get it to respond to the code until it finally stopped. Yes all my valuables are locked in the safe! I have the combination and it wont work! The Sentry company simply responded that after a year it is no longer under warranty so I will have to find a locksmith who will open it! I searched the web to find help some other way only to find my complaint was not at all isolated! Google "cant open my Sentry safe" and see how many hits it gets! Well, I am filing a complaint and hope Consumer affaires will look into these costly but unreliable "safes". I thought this was an investment to give me piece of mind for my valuables! I wont buy another one of the Sentry products. A simple lock box like my parents had will do and wont cost as much.
