Customer Review: Perfect For A Dorm Room

This is not a heavy duty fire safe, nor is it designed to be. It is a nice sized security box for a small office or dorm room.
I bought this for my daughter's dorm room. The construction quality is quite good. And the 1.0 Cubic foot size allows her to put her 13" Mac Book in with no problems. It comes with an upper shelf which is good for cell phones, iPods, prescriptions, keys, etc. Plus, even with her laptop in the bottom, there is still plenty of extra room for other things.
Two additional features make it ideal for my daughter's dorm room:
First, is the backup key lock. Once you set your electronic combination, there should be no problems, but if there is, you can override the keypad with a key. The safe comes with 2 keys, so I gave one to my daughter as a backup, and keep one in my safe (a real fire safe) at home, in case I ever have to overnight it up to her.
Second (and this is very important for a dorm room, or a room where you can not anchor the safe into wall studs), is the cable system, which is included. It allows you to loop the supplied cable around a cross member under a bed, or desk, and attach it, through the back, to a spring clamp bolted inside the safe. Now this isn't "theft proof" by any means, but removing the safe would require carrying her dorm bed down the hall with it, taking an axe to break up the bed frame, or having a nice pair of bolt cutters to cut the anchor cable. Anyway, one would hope that it's enough to make it "too hard a target" for the casual opportunist to bother with.
Amazon's combination of price and free shipping was the best I found on this safe. So, if you need a decent, locking, security box, capable of being cable anchored to furniture or fixtures, and large enough to fit a laptop and a bunch of accessories, I would really recommend this.
