I too was looking at the jet mini lathes and on a tip from a friend whos been turning for years picked up this shopfox lathe. Its half the price of the Jet, and the shopfox is sweet. It arrived in good condition (i was afraid bc of the horror stories I've read about people receiving these damaged) and I put it together right away and started turning. The SPEED CONTROL KNOB IS AS GREAT FEATURE for the cheap price. Most lathes in this price range have gears that you must manually change to adjust speed. Ive had it about a month now and have used it EVERY DAY trying out its capabilities. Ive made ear jewelry from 3/8" up to 3" and even made a few bigger bowls on it. I only have a few complaints.
1. After about 2 weeks the 7" tool rest snapped in half during use. I was turning a bowl and it just gave out and snapped off
2. when turning bigger pieces there is A LOT of vibration (probably due to it being so light) and the little bones you use to tighten the tool rest vibrated so violently that the balls came unscrewed and it flew out somewhere and i still haven't found it
3. The handle on the tail stock. From what Ive seen all the cheaper models have just a round knob to tighten the tail stock. This one is high quality metal but due to it not having any kind of handle or 'suicide knob' its hard to get a grip and get it fully tight at times when working with harder woods and buffalo horn.
All in all I am very satisfied with my purchase and recommend this lathe to anyone getting into turning. I got this lathe and a set of chisels delivered to my door for about $220. This lathe blows anything else in its pricerange out of the water. BEST KEPT SECRET OF SHOPFOX
