Tools and Hardware Reviews of Sierra Electric JB5293 Motion Sensor Entry Light

Customer Review: comes on night or day
Summary: 3 Stars

The unit is easy to install and provides 'adequate' light sufficient for putting a key in a door lock or to prevent stumbling in the dark. If you expect a bright light, this is not your solution.
Comes on during daylight also. Not the best use of the battery power when a simple photosensor would make it so much better a device. After 3 months of occasional use, the 30 second auto-off timer died. It is now essentially a wall mounted led flashlight. Still useful but obviously cheaply made. I use the on/off switch to save the batteries and only switch it on when I need it to see the keyhole at night.
Still how much can you get for this low of a price? Even more expensive units don't list a photocell to prevent the unit from operating during daylight..... It seems OK under an overhang outside but I would refrain from exposing it to the elements without an overhang to protect it. With the no-photocell limitation considered, it is otherwise a reasonable product for the money but it is disappointing that the internal timer died after such minimal use.

Customer Review: Very nice and handy
Summary: 5 Stars

The description states that this will shut off after 10 seconds of last activity - however, these shut off after 30 seconds of no activity. Actually, after 30 seconds it dims down slowly then completely shuts off (looks sort of cool how it does that too).
It has a very nice design, and you can angle the light panel to the position you want. What I did to install one light up quickly on a ceiling and another on a wall was to use heavy duty sticky back velcro strips. Works like a charm. These lights are very handy and even my picky husband likes them.
I hunted all over town for these lights (Target, Kmart, Walmart, Fred Meyers, Home Depot, and Lowes) but no one carried them nor had they even heard of these type of lights! All they carried were very small plug in 1 to 3 LED type lights. Don't they know that not all hallways or closets have plug in outlets? This type of light makes an excellent choice to do the job where there is no access to an electrical outlet.

Customer Review: Sierra Light? Take a pass.
Summary: 1 Stars

The light was apparently either a returned of damaged and repaired item.

I am disappointed that an Amazon seller would try to sell a used item.

It had scratches on it and the flip-top feature would not hold the light part up, when the main bdy of the thing was vertical. Maybe that's why it was returned in the first place.

So, I wrapped a bit of wire around the hinge point and got it to stay in the right position. I figured the scratches won't bother me.

It has a weak sensor that will only activate the light if directly in front of it with a range of approx. 6 feet. Weak light too. Won't light up a very large area.

It does not have a daytime "off" function, which means even when it's light out, it will turn on.

Anyway, not worth sending back. It's junk and don't waste your money.

Customer Review: Not as Bright as the Picture Shows
Summary: 2 Stars

I wasn't thrilled, its worth $12. The motion range is poor - 2 feet dead on and thought it would be brighter. To give you a comparison a small flash lite powered by 2 AA batteries is brighter then this 7 LED soft lite that takes 3 C batteries. My guess is this puts out 4 to 5 watts. The higher up you install it the less affective the lighting becomes, don't expect it to light up your porch or driveway with gleam. It may work for you in a shed, stairwell or basement utility closet which is were I installed mine.

I purchased with the Fulcrum Light-It 6 LED Porch Light with Motion Sensor, its $30 to the $12 Sierra, but a much better product, its brighter, better light coverage with a 20 foot motion sensor for the driveway, walkway, porch or closet type.
Good luck choosing.

Customer Review: Motion Sensor Light is a bust
Summary: 1 Stars

So far, hands down this is the worst item I've bought from Amazon. The light this thing emits is very dim, on a REALLY dark night it does help some, but not nearly enough. The lid doesn't stay where you put it, the mounting holes are on the large part, and there is no way to tighten the face part so it falls down over the motion sensor, making it useless. If you put it the way the picture shows, it falls... if I installed it so it's stright up, it stays, but the light shines AT you, instead of on the stairs where I need it, and in the dark, the LAST thing you need is light in your eyes, even as weak as these bulbs are. So on a scale of 1-10, you get a 1 for this one Sierra. Love to have my money back on this one.
