Tools and Hardware Reviews of Sinometer AC/DC Auto/Manual Range Digital Multimeter, MS8268Customer Review: Good but not perfect Summary: 4 Stars
The Good:
Large display, has backlight so you can see in dark places. However the backlight only turns on for 5 seconds when LIGHT button pressed (it doesn't continuously stay on)
Auto-power off feature helps save battery life. While most meters have this feature, this one beeps when it turns off to alert you of that fact, which is a nice touch
Jack protection feature which prevents you from blowing a fuse or worse if you have the probes connected to the current jacks but you are trying to measure voltage. The meter detects when the probes are inserted all the way into the various jacks and if not correct for the selected function the meter beeps repeatedly and flashes the correct jacks that should be used. The jacks have LEDs around them and the meter also lights up a jack if a probe is not pushed in fully to make proper contact. This is a good safety feature, after all you would not want to test potentially hazardous voltage with a probe not connected properly and get a false "dead, safe to touch" reading only to find out otherwise! That would be a shocking experience! (pardon the pun but I had to say that)
The Bad:
Uses 3 x "AAA" batteries. I feel using "AA" would lead to longer battery life, especially if the backlight is used often. (To be fair I have not used the meter enough to require a change of batteries as yet)
Backlight cannot continuously stay on. The 5 second duration is too short, I would have preferred 10 seconds but there is no way to change it.
Continuity beeper should be louder, it's difficult to hear in noisy environments. (The beeper is the same volume & tone as the cheaper TekPower TP4000ZC).
hFE plug-in should not have been needed, other meters have the jack built-in to the meter itself. If you don't measure transistor gain (hFE) much then this is probably not a drawback. But if you do then you have to keep track of the little adapter that plugs into the meter.
Comparison with TekPower TP4000ZC
This meter is physically larger, but has a larger display which is a plus. Also it's backlit and can measure hFE which the TekPower cannot. Additionally there's the jack protection feature which the TekPower does not have. I'd say the Mastech probably is worth the 10 bucks extra. However if you're looking to pinch pennies and don't need the extra features check out the TekPower TP4000ZC PC based RS232-Interaced Auto Ranging Digital Multimeter
