Tools and Hardware Reviews of Skylink WS-100/WS-100N Wireless Remote Control, Channel ACustomer Review: Will not work with a power adapter type plug Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this to control a device in my basement while I'm upstairs. I don't really need an outdoor unit but the description and reviews here on amazon made me feel that this might be a better unit then the ones designed to work indoors only.
The controller arrived exactly on time so no problems with shipping (thank you Amazon!) But the first thing I noticed was that, because of the way its designed, I could not plug a small power adapter into it. Not even the type that comes with cellphones. The ONLY type of plug that will work with this is a normal lamp type plug because there is a "lip" that surrounds the receptacle area making it too tight to plug in even the smallest power adapter (I'm assuming to protect it from rain for outdoor use). If you look at the picture Amazon includes, just imagine the receptacle is recessed a half inch or so up from the casing, and the casing is not removable.
Now I did consider just getting a dremel or something to cut enough of this hard plastic lip off so I could plug my small power adapter into it. However when I tested the controller with a lamp, plugged into an outlet that I was sitting right next to, it only worked about 8 clicks out of 10. This would be no problem if I could see the device I was controlling, but since it will be downstairs in my basement I would have to run all the way down there to make sure which negates the need for the controller in the first place.
My conclusion is that this unit is probably great for outdoor xmas lights or something that dooesn't use a power adapter and where you can see when its on or off. I returned the unit and I'm still looking for something to fit my needs.
