Tools and Hardware Reviews of Skylink WS-100/WS-100N Wireless Remote Control, Channel ACustomer Review: Does not work for plasma lamp on a DC adapter Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this for an old Lumisource 12 inch tall plasma lamp with a big DC adaptor. I had to tape the adaptor on as it would fall out of the socket of the Skylink base unit otherwise. The base unit has about a 1 cm lip around three sides of the socket that prevent a good snug fit for the boxy adapter. It DOES TURN ON THE LAMP but it does not turn it off. At least it does two of the three things I got it for. First it seperates the lamp from the household current so that the adapter does not get warm even when the lamp is turned off and suck up electricity needlessly. Second, it allows me to plug the lamp into an interior wall outlet located behind a big piece of furniture in a small room where the adaptor would demmand extra space. Too bad it only turns the lamp on. I have to turn it off then on again at the lamp's switch to reset it. It works great with my standard AC plug appliences but I did not get it for any of them.
Customer Review: Bad range when first installed, worse when it got cold Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this because its claimed range is 100' - more than many competing units. When I installed it in the fall, it never worked at anywhere near that distance - would work maybe 50% of the time standing inside the house next to a window that's about 50' from where the receiver is located (outside in the yard).
But here's the worse part: as the weather got colder, the range decreased - a lot! When it's 20 degrees F outside, it won't work from more than about 10 feet away. Completely useless for my application (trying to control outdoor lights from inside the house).
I'm an electrical engineer and understand the considerations with designing electronics to work over varying temperatures. Clearly the designers of this thing put in little or no effort in that area. For indoor use that might not be an issue, but outdoors = bad news.
Customer Review: Works great most of the time! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this remote control because we have woods directly behind our house and at night when we let our dogs out they like to run into them to use the bathroom. With this wireless remote control I was able to put a floodlight out in the yard and shine it into the woods to light it up when we take them out. I used double sided tape to mount the switch to the door so its easy to use without having to constantly plug/unplug an extension cord. This switch works 99% of the time, the other 1% sometimes you have to hit the button more then once to get it to work. 'm using it at a distance of about 30 feet from the receiver unit, But it really does work well, just remember to let it hang with the outlet side facing down to keep water out as that seems to be the biggest gripe. But for my purposes it works well.
Customer Review: Wireless 110v. Switch has a ridge that blocks the outlet Summary: 4 Stars
This switch turns whatever you plug into it on & off. It works with an RF remote, so it can't be controlled by a learning TV remote, which I would like, but it works great. There was one problem. Right where you plug your device into the 110v. outlet, there's a RIDGE in the plastic housing. I use mine with a power supply module for an external hard drive and its impossible to plug it in with that ridge right next to the socket. However, I notched out the ridge with my Dremil tool very easily and my power module fits now. The module works great otherwise, and the ridge might not be an issue with just a standard plug. The Maker of this switch should remove that obtrusive ridge. You could also probably use one of those short pigtails to make it work with a large plug-in. I would recommend this device.
Customer Review: Quick Remote Solution for my Fountain Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great, quick and inexpensive way to put the on/off switch right in your hand. I recently installed a small fountain in my landscape near my front door. I ran a new GFI'd electric outlet previously in expectation of a fountain there, but wanted something besides the usual timer for controlling it. After hooking up the fountain... Christmas time and the usual exterior seasonal lights and reindeer were setup. I decided to use this remote solution for those too. Love it! .... no more running outside in the cold to unplug the Christmas lights late at night.
I do have this under my eaves. I definitely feel more comfortable keeping this in a relatively dry location for an exterior solution. So if you have that type of indoor/outdoor situation this is the ticket for you.
