Tools and Hardware Reviews of Slant/Fin GF200 Germ-Free 2-Gallon Warm-Mist HumidifierCustomer Review: TIP Summary: 4 Stars
This was the only germ-free humidifer I could find. I also had a problem with the water sensor but after 2 years of use. One of the sensors has corroded away but it still works. I moved from NYC to Toronto where the water seems to be harder, thus more frequent need of cleaning. I cleaned the humidifier only once while living in NY, but have had to clean it after a month here. Canada doesn't allow shipping of the UV lightbulbs nor mineral pads so stock up if you move out of the US!
I purchased 2 other humidifers after moving to Canada, but none seem to be as effective as the Slant/Fin and they both recommend DAILY and MONTHLY cleaning and both have risk of bacteria (cool and warm mist). I'd rather clean the calcium and rust deposits when needed than worry about bacteria growth and have calcium deposits too. Thus I have given in and prefer the Slant/Fin which improves the humidity level (I have a device that measures humidity level in the air) much faster than others and the large reservoirs allow the humidifier to run through the night.
TIP: Use CLR! Soak it for 2 mins and use a toothbrush to clean the water sensor

I was very, very surprised to read the other reviews for this product. I have had 2 of these over the past 12 years or so; the first one lasted for more than 5 years, and the second one is already more than 5 years old. I try to clean it once a week. There is quite a bit of mineral build-up on it at this point, but since I've owned this unit for 5+ years, I'm not all that surprised; and it doesn't seem to make the humidifier any less effective. Most of it can be scrubbed away with a toothbrush, especially the build-up (what I think some people are calling "corrosion"?) on the sensors. The noise doesn't bother me, though I agree with what some others have said--that it sounds like a pot of boiling water. I use an air filter while I sleep, anyway, so I can barely even hear it.
I have never had one of these leak, and I have never had to deal with Slant/Fin's customer service. I haven't ever had any part of it break. I hope I continue to have this kind of luck with it, and I am sorry that so many others haven't.
Customer Review: good product Summary: 4 Stars
I love the quiet level of this humidifier. It does have a light humm, not like a table top fountain, and a little light gurgle but nothing that is obnoxious or would keep me awake. I prefer warm mist humidifiers because they are recomended for Asthma sufferers and for kids who get the croup alot. There is a variable humidity dial and I'll keep it low for night and high for when I'm sick. Low will last 2 days and high moisture lasts about 10 hours. I'm not thrilled about the little mineral pads but they do collect ALOT and I have Chicago city water. I will soak the base twice a year in vinegar and it cleans up beautifully! No need to heat the vinegar, besides it would end up as a vapor and stink up the room. The filling of the tank is on the bottom and can be a little cumbersom getting the seal just right and then flipping the tank over to return it to the base. But over all, I'm very happy with my humidifier and I've had it for 3 years now and I don't plan on replacing it any time soon.
Customer Review: Avoid this product! Summary: 1 Stars
This product is profoundly disappointing and frustrating. I first bought one in January of 2006. It arrived around January 15 and ran constantly until it failed around March 1. For no reason, the humidifier ceased operating at some point - the tank was half-full, there were no electrical difficulties in the house, but the humidifier stopped working. I figured I had broken it, so I bought another one in January of 2007. This one ran for about two weeks before stopping. I sent it back to Slant Fin, who took six weeks to repair it an send it back - too late to be useful in that season. It was packed away until this January, 2008. This time, the humidifier ran for four weeks before failing. Final cost? $189 for a total of approximately 12 weeks of humidification.
When it worked, it was fine. Difficult to clean, but it really seemed to provide quiet, clean humidity. It just doesn't work for long.

Slant/Fin GF200 Germ-Free 2-Gallon Warm-Mist Humidifier
This is a fairly inexpensive humidifier that fulfills the old adage that you get what you pay for.
I have used it for about 1 month at a time for 3 + years and it works fairly well, is a bit of a challenge to clean, but it is doable, especially if you soak the minerals in white vinegar or a demineralizer before you try to clean them. And now the bulb says it needs to be replaced, but appears to be working fine and is boiling away. Would I buy new parts for this unit-No. I would more likely go out and buy a new humidifier with a better satisfaction record. Which is what I am going to do.
