Tools and Hardware Reviews of Smith's SK2 2-Stone Sharpening KitCustomer Review: Good set for your pocket and hunting knives at a low cost Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this set in 1972 for, as I recall, $5.99 + tax. It has served me well over the years, and I have sharpened many pocket and hunting knives of various sizes and blade shapes on it since. Surely one can get bigger, better stones for more money, but for the price paid for this set now days, and for the average knife, it does a fine job. (No pun intended.) One just has to learn how to use it correctly to obtain the best results.
I don't think the kit has changed much since '72. Back then, the bigger of the two stones, a 5" Soft (medium) Arkansas Stone was attached to a wooden base, making it much easier to use in a safer manner than a shorter stone or one without a base. But the draw backs to that is, you only get to use one side of the stone. I found the 4" Hard Arkansas (fine) Stone, though a great stone able to put a very fine edge on a blade, a bit difficult to use because of its short length. It took quite a bit of consistent use to form a habit of sharpening at the correct angle while keeping even pressure on the central part of the blade, with consistent strokes, that avoided cutting my self while holding the stone. A longer hard stone would definitely be easier and safer to use, especially for longer blades.
The '72 kit also contained a 4 oz. can of Smith's Honing Oil, instead of the 1 oz. bottle, as a well as a form-fit plastic case to store everything.
Their original honing oil has been replaced by Smith's Honing Solution. Whether that's an entirely new oil or a new name for an old oil, I don't know. But the original can of oil lasted a long time.
I found the little plastic angle guide pretty much useless to use, for its only as good as an area of a blade that is completely straight. Once one begins to draw into the curve and then even to the tip of a curved blade, acquired skill must be used to keep the cutting (sharpening) angle consistent, which requires the knife's grip to be raised evenly throughout the stroke. Then repeating the identical motion in exact opposite for the other side of the blade, took learning new coordinations not normally accustomed to a right handed person. (However I'm sure the same would hold true for a left handed person.)
Care must also be taken to keep the stones clean and well lubricated while sharpening, and keeping the angle correct so one is not only cutting the correct angle into the blade, but also to take care to use the expanse of its surface with utmost contact at any given time, while following the flat and curvature of the blade's edge, also while staying clear of the stone's edges, for cutting too exclusively along the stone's edges, especially with too much pressure and inadequate lubrication, can cause the stone to chip and wear unevenly, which will eventually cause irreparable damage to the stone.
I would recommend this kit, but taken into account what kind of knives it will be used for and what length of blades they have. Therefore, I would recommend this kit for blades which are no more than 5" in length and which are of a thicker more stout back of the blade than that of most kitchen cutlery; for a thicker blade enables a firmer, more controlled stroke which is necessary when using on small stones. With a longer blade, one will need a longer stone, for one will need more cutting area without the possibility of running the blade off the end or edge of the stone before completing the blade's draw of action; and especially for the harder fine stone, in that case would do well to be several inches longer than this 4" stone.
Hope that helps. :^)
