Tools and Hardware Reviews of Smith & Wesson SWHRT9B Black HRT Boot Knife

Customer Review: Don't worry, this is very much worth it. (EJW)
Summary: 5 Stars

Hello all. You can calm your fears of recieving a less than par quality product with this item. I did not buy my boot knife from this site, but it is the exact same item, so in other words, potato, pototto. Well then, getting back on the subject of the knife, this is one of the finer quality knives that I have had so far. You can use the clip to attach it to your waist or your boot, hence the name boot knife. I modified my sheath a little in order to strap it around my ankle. The knife is coated with a black layer of paint, which prevents rust. This is not a two piece (blade and handle) knife. The blade and handle are one, and are made of metal, which greatly increases the durability of the item, and lessens the chance of it breaking into two pieces. The handle is very smooth, but easy to grip, and is very comfortable. To my surprise, I found this knife to be somewhat balanced. This brought to mind the question of whether or not it was throwable. I can assure you, it is very throwable. I have never thrown knives before, but after about an hour of practice, I was landing hits into boards five feet away. I am not guaranteeing that the purchaser of this product will be able to sucessfully throw this knife on his/her first attempt, but throwing is a definite possiblity with this product. Don't worry, it is very durable, for I have missed my target quite a few times, in which case the knife would strike the concrete floor. To my amazement and relief, the knife was still in one piece. (A word to the beginning thrower- do not throw as hard as you can. A light throw does just fine with this model at 3 feet. In my case, I land more hits by holding the knife by the blade when I throw it- oh, and practice first by throwing the knife into the ground)
A quick note to the buyer- please be safe with knives of any kind. This is a very nice knife, but it is not one to be carried around everywhere, for this knife's shape and make/model limit it to be classified as a weapon more than anything else, unlike a pocket knife, which can in most cases be classified as a tool.
Don't forget to enjoy yourselves, though.

Cheers

Customer Review: It's worth the price
Summary: 4 Stars

The handle is a plastic/rubber compound, but pretty solid and well made. No fears of it slipping out of your hand.

The leather sheath serves its purpose. Its well made and fairly high quality. The snap isn't very strong. In a self defense type scenario I suppose easy release of the strap would be good. Its a small drawback, but negligable because while easy to draw the knife, it sits pretty firm in the sheath and I have no fears of it "falling out".

It's not very comfortable in my desert combat boot. But then again, I have Belleville gortex boots, and they're not very stiff to begin with. A tall leather boot or a more firm military boot might offer a little more comfort and stability. With that being said, there's no need to "conceal" this knife out here in the desert anyway. My personal favorite spot to mount it is on a strap on my drop leg holster I use for my M9. The clip on the sheath is kind of wide, but it fits into a loop of my IOTV (improved outer tactical vest) pretty easy.

Maybe some people got a super sharp knife, and maybe some people have extremely easy-to-shave arm hair, but this knife is NOT razor sharp out of the box. Don't get me wrong, It's still fairly sharp and it will still cut you. As with any knife, you should always practice safe handling procedures. Just dont' expect to be splitting hairs without working on the edge(s) a bit.

All in all, you can't beat the price. Comparable knives go for $50-$100, and I picked this one up through Amazon for $16 and some change. Its a solid knife and gives me comfort to have 1 more quality tool I can count on to defend myself with, or feild dress a cute little bunny for dinner if I'm in a survival situation. Plus it just looks cool :)

Customer Review: Great knife for the money, Sheath has 1 major flaw
Summary: 4 Stars

The knife is great, simple, and has a durable handle and blade. It's a simple, effective design. Great price. Only thing about the knife really worth noting is that the blade is double-sided (in case you can't tell by the pictures lol) and that the rubberized handle was rubberized successfully, meaning it is fully sealed with no seams and will weather nicely (with respect to UV and water).
Other than the knife, the sheath is pretty lame in one aspect: the simple belt-clip style severely limits the mounting ability. Even when the release snap is undone in order to remove the blade from the sheath, the simple friction is too much for the belt clip. As a result, the majority of the time the sheath will entirely remove from the belt with the sheath still on the end of the blade. I'll probably just drill a hole in the clip itself (metal) and do some sort of clip and knot tying combination. Though, I will say I'm surprised how much I have liked the little strap and button that loops over the blade guard preventing the knife from falling out of the sheath. It snaps very easily, yet doesn't prevent a very quick removal. I actually bought this knife for $10 and it's worth every penny despite the sheath flaws. I've known people who've owned these knives for almost 7 years now and they've held up well... Normally people lose things before they last 7 years.
I've never used the knife for anything other than cutting and stabbing... no prying or hammering.
Sorry, one last thing- the blade isn't extremely sharp even when brand new. It's a more durable blade design rather than extreme, hollow-ground edge. I personally could careless, I have other pocket knives that serve a better purpose when in need of something extremely sharp.

Customer Review: Solid working knife.

First off you should know that this thing is built like a tank. The grip (though smallish) WANTS to be held and is coated with what feels like rubberized sandpaper. The blade faces are the same way and feel like sandpaper, but in a great way. The knife is totally blacked out except for the exposed honed edges. Comes out of the box sharp enough to make you nervous, and this is coming from a knife fetishist. Not some noob who buys from BudK and calls everything "razor sharp". Whole knife is balanced enough to throw in the "no spin" method up to about 8 feet without a second thought.
It is not razor sharp because it is not a razor. It is however, "dont eff around with me" sharp on both edges.
Sheath is solidly built of thick black leather and is easy to open by simply slamming the hand down over the button then pulling back up with the handle in your grip. Personally I'd like to have seen a Kydex one simply because the knife is so sharp that sometimes when sheathing the blade I can feel it cutting the leather at the bottom of the sheath. But the fit is secure and aside from irking me now and again it has served well enough.
Let it be known that this IS a boot knife. The clip on the sheath is not at the center off gravity so this cannot efficiently be worn on the belt as it will slump over. It is meant to be worn in the internal outside side of the boot. I wear mine with a pair of mil-spec Vibram combat boots and so far it has deployed without a hitch on the few times i have used it.
This knife has the potential to be an EDC workhorse without putting a demonstrative dent in your budget.
At 15 bucks, buy it.

Customer Review: One of my favorite knives!
Summary: 4 Stars

I am a lover of high value tools and toys such as Ka-bar and Glock for example, but this is truly an item of utermost extreme quality. My brother took this same modle to Marjah yes that push into Afgan that the news was talking about. He abslolutly loves this knife even more than his Ka-bar and Marines love their Ka-bars. Now bare in mind that this is not a utility blade it is strictly meant for self defense and as a backup knife in a fight or tussle. If you have any knid of duty that will put you in danger of your life you need some sort of back up weapon that includes a subcompact gun and a knife. Well this is the perfect little life saver to complete the package along with your Kel-tec. Don't let the "stainless" deter you from this blade because it is made for pierceing not anything crazy. The true specs on this blade are 4 7/8in, or 12.5cm of blade length and 4 1/4 or 11cm of auctual cutting edge. The handle is 4 1/4in or 11cm and overall it is 9in or 23cm. The knife in sheath weighs about 4 oz and blade alone is about 3oz. A well made sheath of leather with a very sturdy clip and a button snap that is very easy to remove upon extraction. The handle is long enough for my hands and I have large hands but is a little skinney so thickend it up with some electrial tape and then athletic tape for added grip. I only gave it four stars because it did not come very sharp and it did need some stone work. But overall it is a great knife, buy one and see how you like it if you don't just give it to your brother because he might enjoy it.
