Tools and Hardware Reviews of Soleus Air CFM-25E 25-Pint Dehumidifier with HumidistatCustomer Review: What moisture? Summary: 5 Stars
I moved into a basement apartment in the mountains of Western North Carolina in August of this year. Within a few days I noticed my clothes, linens, and mattress were rather damp. I tried a few different things; fans, Damp-Rid, turning on the heat, etc. After I noticed mildew and mold growing on the mattress, I decided it was time to get a dehumidifier. Looking around the net and local stores, even "cheap" dehumidifiers were over $100. I saw the Soleus and thought: That's too much money, I'm a broke college student. But the more I looked around, and read reviews, the more I realized it was better to buy a good product for a bit more, than risk wasting $100 on an inferior product. Within 2 days, my apartment felt drier. By the end of the week my place was a desert. Even on the highest setting the Soleus is relatively quite, quieter than any of the fans I had running, and the hum is the sort of white-noise that puts me to sleep anyway. Now that my apartment is thoroughly dried out, I only empty the reservoir about once a week. The Soleus was definitely worth the money, I'm very happy with my purchase.
Customer Review: Works well at 1/3rd the power of my old one Summary: 5 Stars
Replaced my 19-year old Sears dehumidifier. Was a workhorse, but on its last legs. This new one draws about 1/3rd the power for about 2/3rds the water handling capacity, and is a lot, lot quieter. I have circulation fans that are louder than this unit when it's on high. My wattmeter tells me it's drawing around 190W on the high setting when the compressor is running. It's been running continuously in my basement since mid July with no problems.
Hooking it up to a continuous drain hose was easy; the 15mm hose translates well to a standard 5/8" garden hose.
Update (August 2009): Purchased in July 2005; died a few months ago, so it lasted about 4 years under almost continuous use. The fan still runs, but the compressor never turns on regardless of the humidity setting. It was about $50 less back then, so it's not all that bad. My previous Kenmore unit lasted almost 5x as long, but drew 3 times the power for almost the same capacity, so this Soleus paid for itself in just over a year. If I could change my rating, I'd give it 3 stars now due to lower reliability.
Customer Review: Nice quiet unit but no where near 25 pints/day Summary: 4 Stars
The Soleus Air CFM-25E is indeed a very quiet dehumidifier and it also draws a low 200W in normal operation and about 24W with just the fan running (it always runs). It however won't come close to extracting 25 pints per day under most situations. The reason is because the 25 pint/day rating is for 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30C) at a relative humidity of 80%. If Soleus spec'd the unit using the AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) criteria of 80F/60%RH it would get about a 15 pint/day rating. Under the conditions I have used the unit, around 75F and 55-60%RH (according to my little indoor thermometer/hydrometer), I've observed less than 9 pints/day with it set to continuous operation mode with the fan on high which barely kept the humidity stable. If you have a small space, probably 250 sq ft or less, that needs dehumidifying and you want a quiet appliance then this one is for you. For me it is far too small for my 1,050 square foot apartment so I'll have to buy something much larger or save the electricity and live with the humidity...until winter that is!
Customer Review: Outstanding Summary: 5 Stars
I have rated this unit as outstanding mainly because it is so
quiet when running. On high is it quiet, on low, you have to
get right next to the unit to hear that it is on. I find
myself glancing at the unit to see if the red "bucket full"
light is on, because its so hard to hear it running.
You'll really appreciate this if you need to run it
while sleeping in the same room. Works perfectly too of
course.
I have had one unit for a couple of years, and it has
worked perfectly all that time. I bought a second unit
(large house so needed two), first bought competitors
brand unit of similar price. Competitors unit was
absolutely dreadful, hideously noisy. Immediately
returned that and bought another Soleus unit. Imagine,
some people buy popular brands like Whirlpool, and think
they have to live with something so noisy it'll keep you
awake (from another room!).
I can't rave enthusiastically enough about the
Soleus dehumidifier. Its just -the one to buy!
Customer Review: Quiet Machine, easy to operate, great price Summary: 5 Stars
This is my first dehumidifier I have purchased, and I researched many brands before choosing this one. Buying a dehumidifer isn't the most fun activity -- I'd rather spend $$$ on other things, but I needed one in my shared living situation in SF. The noise level is minimal (less than a fan on the lowest setting) and I can sleep with it running. I do not hear any drip-drip-drip noises that can be a problem with other units, or so I hear. The Soleus unit is abuot the size of standard carry-on luggage and is not as huge as the box it comes in! I only have issues about this machine: It does not come with the "guard unit" as displayed in the brochure. I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes, as the unit has been running fine. Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase and I recommend this product, esp. if you cannot deal with trying to locate one of these at a store in SF (you will not, I tell you - if you do, it will cost you an arm and a leg). Your best best is Amazon for a Soleus Dehumidifier. Enjoy your moisture and odor free surroundings and buy one now!
