Tools and Hardware Reviews of Sonin 00700 Water Alarm with Remote SensorCustomer Review: Worth the price, and a lot more! Summary: 5 Stars
This inexpensive device is wonderful, without exception. I have one placed where water occasionally backs up from a drain and, until I installed one of these, damaged carpeting several times. This Sonin alarm sensor is positioned just next to the floor drain, and at the first bit of any moisture, emits a very loud alarm. It allows me to take action immediately and prevent the water rising further (the cause of the problem can be managed but not corrected). I installed this device several years ago and it has paid for itself many times over since then then. I just bought two more for use under sinks where water sometimes leaks and causes damage. I expect that will be a problem of the past in those areas now. Battery life is so long that when the unit beeps (similar to smoke detectors) to indicate a low battery, I have forgotten about it completely and have to spend some time tracking the elusive brief beeps. I could not ask for better performance and reliability. Very worthwhile investment.
Customer Review: No problems, Big savings Summary: 4 Stars
We have a split AC unit so the coil drainpan is in a hall closet in the upstairs. If the drainlines get clogged, the pan will overflow onto the closet floor and eventually saturated the Ceiling drywall in the downstairs foyer.
This overflow happened once and cost me $75 and 7hrs to repair.
I purchased 2 Sonin 700s,gave one as a gift and placed the other next to my AC drainpan. I'd had it around 14 months when it detected moisture and alerted me.Only the plywood was damp in a small area.
The Alarm had paid for itself 3 fold. I vacumed the drainline and when the wood was dry after a couple hours, I reset the alarm.
Con: It worked great but because I was home to hear it alert me. If nobody is home, the alert wont help. But,for the price, it saved my neck this time and paid for itself in just 1 event.Otherwise, I would have given it 5 stars.
Customer Review: Poor Quality Control Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this product about 5 years ago and it works great. It's in the basement and is loud enough to hear anywhere on the first floor and in some locations on the second floor.
So why the negative review? I bought another in December 2010. It looks identical to the first one but the alarm now sounds like the faint chirping of a cricket. Tried different batteries, same result. OK, well the first one is still working well, I asked Amazon for a replacement. Free return shipping, fast turn around time. I love Amazon. However, replacement alarm has exactly the same problem. You would not be able to hear this thing across a medium sized room unless it was the dead of the night. I don't know what happened to the quality control at Sonin, but I recommend that you look elsewhere. It's more than likely that you'll be sending yours back as well.
Customer Review: Quality Control -- Lemon in the Night Summary: 4 Stars
We own several of these water alarms, having recently purchased three after good experiences with earlier ones. BUT, one of those new purchases is a battery eater -- four new 9v batteries including two of the more expensive long-life types since we put it into service in February. When the battery gets drained, the alarm chirps to let you know -- unfortunately, it's easiest to hear the chirps at night, in bed. And it's hard to know which unit is chirping until you get up, traipse around, and locate the exact source. Now I learn that the return period expired ten days ago. My advice would be to return one of these clunkers as soon as it eats the second battery. The others have lasted over a year before needing a battery replacement. If the seller or manufacturer would like a defective sample to test, I have it right here on my desk...
Customer Review: Still works 9 years later - i will buy another Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased one of these to put under my hot water heater back in 2001.
All of this rain we have been having, put some water down the other end of my basement (away from the hot water heater).
Had I caught this sooner I could have pulled up a few of the carpet tiles before they all soaked in the water.
So I need one of these for the other end of my basement. I read some reviews here, where folks said their water alarms failed. So I thought, let me test the one I have. I put it next to one of the wet carpet tiles and it beeped. Since it still works after 9 years, I'll buy another.
Keep in mind it does not beep that load, but this is a common complaint with these things. You wont hear this in your upstairs bedroom, but for slow water leaks it is fine.
