Tools and Hardware Reviews of Sonin 00700 Water Alarm with Remote Sensor

Customer Review: Nice while it lasted.
Summary: 2 Stars

Had one installed for a year before it started making little chirpy noises. Replaced battery, cleaned sensor, nothing helped. Before it died it did work though.

Remote sensor is very handy: mount the alarm up where you can see and easily test it, while the sensor lives under the sink, behind the washer, etcetera.

Did like the battery test button. Some detectors don't have any way to test or tell you the battery is dead. It's like the smoke detector problem, where you mount them in out of the way places then tend to forget about them and the batteries die, leaving you unprotected.

There are plenty of other devices like this on the market, so no reason to put up with this one.

This very same device is also sold under the Little Giant brand.

Customer Review: Worked great for us
Summary: 4 Stars

We have two of these in our attic for water sensing in the water heater leak pan, and our overflow pan for the air conditioner. The small size of the sensor was a plus, as the water heater leak pan does not have much room in it. I sometimes got false alarms in the humid summer months, that I surmised was the sensor picking up the condensation on the galvanized pans. I solved that by putting a dried out sponge on the pan, and then the sensor on it. Two weeks ago our $12 purchase paid off when our 8-yr old water heater started leaking. The alarm immediately went off. It is very loud, so you have no trouble hearing it in the living area. Water heaters generally leak before burst and if you have a water heater in your attic, you are foolish if you don't have something like this.

Customer Review: Great for a fish tank alarm
Summary: 5 Stars

I got a new canister filter for my fish tank that goes underneath it with plumbing and valves n other stuff so I was worrying about hoses popping off and filling the house up with water but with this at least if I'm around I can stop it. It's pretty loud, I'm in a single story 3 br house with no basement and can hear it all around the house. I accidentally test it all the time when I'm changing the filters getting it wet so it always seems to work too. To shut it off you just get the sensor out of the water. This doesn't say in the descrption but it has about a 6 foot cord rolled up inside too so that was good. For the price it's a great little alarm and looks good too, has a slot on the back so I mounted it on the outside of my tank stand with the wire going through a hole

Customer Review: Works, but finicky
Summary: 3 Stars

I soldered in a longer wire on the detector so that the alarm can be upstairs and the detector in the basement.

It became very likely to go off on its own with one polarity and okay on the other. I can't think of a reason for this, except that it doesn't care for my modification.

Nevertheless it's worked correctly a couple of times over a few years.

Now it's started sounding continuously regardless of water conditions. I'll look for a better one first before replacing it, I think; but this one did work for quite a while, albeit always on the edge of not working right.

The alarm is loud but not loud enough to hear on the second floor if it's in the basement, even if all doors are open.

Customer Review: It saved the day!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought 3 of these water alarms - after a leaky pipe caused a problem.

Now, months later, the alarm under the kitchen sink went off - because a fitting on the side of the garbage disposal sprang a leak and was flooding the cabinet under the sink. The alarm went off when there was only a little water - but I would not have even known there was a problem until there had been a lot of damage.

This little alarm saved me a lot of $$$ this week.

It is really, really loud. The water sensor has 2 metal contacts - it is probably a good idea to clean them from time to time. That and a periodic battery replacement should keep it going for a long time.
