Tools and Hardware Reviews of Sonin 00700 Water Alarm with Remote Sensor

Customer Review: Good Idea - Awful quality!
Summary: 1 Stars

We got one of these for the basement after our humidifier occasionally leaked all over the floor (about 6 months ago). I'd test it regularly and replaced the battery at least once. Recently, my wife called me at work to say the washer had leaked some water on the floor. When I asked her if the alarm went off (it was located very near the washer and on a downgrade from the washer toward the floor drain), she said it was wet but hadn't alarmed. Later, I replaced the battery and neither water nor the test button generated any alarm. Great idea, but useless if the mean time to failure is so much shorter than that for the devices whose failures you're trying to detect...

Customer Review: Saved us from floods several times
Summary: 5 Stars

We have had two of these devices for about six years, and they have saved us from wet carpet etc several times, both when the air conditioner backs up (a regular occurance here on the second floor), and also when the water heater sprang a leak.
The alarms we have go off the instant their feet get damp, and are so loud that even our neighbours downstairs can hear them. We have recommended them and even bought them for several of our older friends, just for the added peace of mind they give.
I do recommend testing them once a month, to make sure the batteries are still good, but over all a great product and very inexpensive for what they do.

Customer Review: not loud enough
Summary: 3 Stars

product works as stated - but is not as loud as I'd like.
Hard to hear the product in the basement when on the first floor with the TV at a moderate level - can't hear it at all from the second floor

I purchased 3 different products wanting to compare and find a good warning device and all are about the same - bottom line is its better than nothing but far from optimal

Customer Review: SAVED MY BASEMENT
Summary: 4 Stars

My sump pump float has been sticking. After the last flooded basement I decided to get an alarm. Installation was pretty straight forward. The sensor comes with a suction cup for placement which did not work in my application. The alarm has already saved my basement. About a month after installation the alarm went off alerting me my sump pump float was stuck again. The cord is only 6 ft long and the sump is in the basement. The alarm is pretty load but with the configuration of my house, the alarm was not easily heard throughout the house. All in all a good value for the money.

Customer Review: If it stops working.....
Summary: 4 Stars

The sensor for this and other Sonin (and probably others!) water alarms uses two tiny metal buttons in the sensor to set off the alarm. Water simply completes the circuit and the alarm sounds. These metal buttons are prone to corrode over time (in my case, about 2 years in a crawl space sump).

If your alarm has stopped working and the battery tests good, lightly scrape the surface of each button so they're shiny again. This removes the corrosion and the sensor will most likely work again. Do this every 6 months or so and test the sensor in water.
