Tools and Hardware Reviews of Starrett 505A-12 ProSite 12-Inch Dial ProtractorCustomer Review: Scale Is Off Summary: 2 Stars
I agree with the other reviewers. I purchased this tool because of the Starett name and was deeply disappointed. The scale was definitely off. When you completely fold up the tool it is blatantly obvious. I e-mailed Starett and they said to return it to them for a replacement. I was not too confident that the new one would be any better. Starrett also stated they were changing the name of the tool to remove the word "protractor" because they had received so many complaints. In my case, I simply printed a "red" arrow on some sticky label paper and then cut it out and overlayed the decal on the tool. It's not pretty but the scale now reads accurately. I would not recommend buying this until this defect is corrected.
Customer Review: Starrett 505A-12 ProSite 12 Inch Dial Protractor Summary: 1 Stars
After receiving 2 of these items, both with the same problem, I opted for the new 7 inch version. The problem with both units of the 505A-12 was that they were not even close to being true with their own calibration marks. I believe that 2 degrees or more are definitely out of spec for any measuring device, especially one that carries the Starrett brand name. I almost think that this type of accuracy would even be out of line for items coming from Harbor Freight! Amszon would not send out a third, so I had no choice but to go with the 7 inch version - which did not have any of the calibration issues of the 12 inch version. I'm glad I was not needing one of these for an immediate job...
Customer Review: Best protractor for woodworking Summary: 5 Stars
been using this tool for a couple months now at work. Its solid and holds the angle well for transferring to other places or just to read the values. The "miter angle" part of the dial is much more helpful than I expected. Each time I used it to measure an angle, then cut two pieces to the displayed miter angle, the joints have been flawless.
I can't fault the dial as it is bigger than most. However, my eyes are sometimes struggling to see which little mark the arrow is pointing to. Assume my only option would for it to have a digital readout, but then the cost would skyrocket.
Plan to keep one close to me in my tool box from now on.
Customer Review: Fine Tool Summary: 5 Stars
This is a fine tool if you are doing alot of miter work. I do door and window casing, crown molding, cabinet installs and stair handrails. This tool will give you the edge to cut perfect inside and outside miters on walls that are not flat or square. Since most miter saw gauges only give you common miter settings in 5 degree increments this tool will let you accurately set your chop saw in one or two degree increments such as cutting stair handrails and pickets at 37 degrees. Where is that number on my chop saw gauge? Your chop saw must be setup accurately for this tool to work. Making test cuts on scrap is still the best way to check the accuracy of your miter.
Customer Review: Starrett 505A - Affordable accuracy Summary: 5 Stars
I can't believe the quality of this protractor for the price. I use it for everything from saw set-up to angle finding and checking. Using the 505A, I actually discovered that one of my combination squares (one that cost more than this protractor) was not square. The gauge is very easy to read. The feature I like best is the tension on the hinge. The 505A is easy to open and close to a specific angle but holds that setting firmly so it can be transferred to a saw blade or miter guide. No thumb screws to get in your way. The 505A is sturdy, accurate and has a flexible design that makes it indispensable for the woodworker. I highly recommend it.
