Tools and Hardware Reviews of SteamFast SF-407 1500-Watt Fabric SteamerCustomer Review: Works very well but smell is intolerable Summary: 2 Stars
This product works very well on wrinkles. I purchased it because I wear a lot of 100% cotton shirts and I found that steaming the wrinkles was very fast and more enjoyable than ironing. Plus steaming eliminates the 'shiny' 'stains' that ironing can cause on cotton and other fabrics.
HOWEVER, I do not recommend purchasing this item because the hose (which as far as I can tell is a heavy rubbery plastic) stinks very strongly when the steamer is heated.
I thought perhaps the smell would dissipate after a few uses but it didn't. I used the unit three times for 45 minutes to an hour and the smell was just as bad after approx. three hours of use as when it was new.
The smell was strong enough to cause headaches and sore throats. I really don't recommend this unit for households with children or pets (and especially birds). I think the off-gassing is bad enough to be harmful to one's health.
I returned the item. I have been looking for a unit that has a hose made of a different material but I have not found one. I may also try a different manufacturer such as Jiffy, but before I purchase, I will call their customer service line and find out the content of their hoses.
Customer Review: Best Clothing Steamer Yet! Summary: 5 Stars
I had another clothing steamer last year that was a little less expensive. It worked okay and did the job, but NOTHING compared to this one.
This SteamFast SF-407 1500-Watt Fabric Steamer far surpases any I've tried. I've used the little hand steamers before too.
The steamfast is the fastest. Not only does it steam the clothing fast but it also heats up quickly.
I totally recommend this to everyone!
It's very affordable too, and I can't imagine that any are any better than this one.
Always used distilled water. That is why my other one broke. But that's okay because I have a better one now.
You can buy counter top water distillers here on amazon which will save you money in the long run.
It's also very good for you to drink instead of tap water. I saw one that made 4 gallons which is what I'm getting. It was the best price. Just look up water distiller.
You can always buy it by the gallon and save up for one if you can't afford it right now.
You will love this steamer though. I give it more stars than the one they advertise on TV (my sister has that one).
Happy buying!

Customer Review: gonna onload this bad purchase Summary: 2 Stars
Got the SF-475 for Xmas '04, but didn't take it out of the box for almost 2 years to finally start those sewing projects...
Unlucky for me the poor design of the brush attachment: got stuck in the wand head and I couldn't get it out to change attachments without it breaking. Had to pick out the little black nubs that held it in the wand head, that had broken off.
I've used for a few years & have been somewhat satisfied: yes, it steams; reasonably well priced; but the handle is stiff and hard to maneuver, and there's leaking despite reading instructions carefully. The straw that breaks this camel's back is that since this model is discontinued, they no longer have brush replacement parts according to Top Innovations. I'm sick of using it without this attachment, and pissed that I have this big thing sitting in my sewing room taking up space and not earning it's keep.
Reminded of all the vacuums I've owned that work well but some dumb little plastic part breaks on the hose, and forever you're struggling to keep the attachments on.
Even if you're coordinated, experienced with other household tools of this type, and patient, save your money and use a high-quality iron, the dry-cleaner, or a hot shower!
Customer Review: Great for draining sinuses and that's about it Summary: 1 Stars
I'm not sure where all these positive reviews came from but this steamer is a piece of junk. I made this purchase based on the reviews of others and I'm not sure if they are smoking something or actually working for this company because this product DOES NOT work.
I can tell you that this product is no substitute for an iron. In fact, steaming clothes with this product is a pain compared to ironing them.
Pro's:
1. Steams quickly (withing 30-40 seconds)
2. Great for relieving sinus congestion
3. Fantastic for steaming your face (just don't get too close to the hose end)
Con's:
1. Doesn't work.
2. Takes more time than ironing.
3. Great accessory for hanging stuff when you are too lazy to make it to the closet.
The only thing that I have been able to successfully steam wrinkles out of is a sheet (actually, a muslin backdrop). That worked out ok and I'm sure it was because the material is rather thin. So, for every day clothes, this steamer is a big loser. If you have thin materials with wrinkles, it works. But, how many people actually have tons of products made entirely from thin materials?
Customer Review: works exactly like it should-it's perfect Summary: 5 Stars
I've used a professional steamer at my work and I've always wanted one but didn't want to spend $200, so when I found this one for $60 I decided it was time to take a chance. This steamer is perfect in every way. It sets up easy, it stores a lot of water, it says it takes 30 seconds to steam but mine is steaming in seconds once I turn it on. The hook is tall enough to put a hanger on while steaming and then it retracts so I can store it in my closet and it only takes up a square foot in there. For those reviewers who expected to get "crisp" pleats, you need to buy a dry-cleaning machine, not a steamer- steam makes the clothing supple and wrinkle free, not "crisp". It will take out wrinkles- it takes me less than a minute to steam a wrinkly button up dress shirt and it's so easy to go around the buttons, the collar etc- unlike ironing which would take forever and you'd wind up making creases working on corners. It does use a lot of power though, I blew a fuse in my 1960's house when I plugged it in with some of my other appliances though. I've only had it a month though so I don't know how long it will last but I love it so far, I just hope it's built well enough to last years.
