Tools and Hardware Reviews of Steelex D1091 Sharpening Stone HolderCustomer Review: Yes it works for most stones, but why? Why? WHY?!?! }>( Summary: 3 Stars
I have seen these and even used them in other's shops. Although it is made well enough and works OK, I can't understand why any woodworker would buy one. It is so easy and economical to make your own holder; one that holds ALL your sharpening stones, instead of just one-at-a-time.
When sharpening edge tools, we usually have to progress through several grit-sizes, then finish with final lapping to remove the burr. Having a single stone-holder that elevates the stone's surface so far surface above the bench (in addition to the stone's thickness) is a distinct DISadvantage. Having ALL your stones arranged by grit-size in a single homemade box is not only less-expensive, but far more efficient. You can make it to fit ANY size of stone, at ANY elevation, for ANY type of tool you own. You can make it for practically nothing in a few minutes. Glue and nails will hold it together for decades. A bead of silicone will make it leak proof too. If you want to get really fancy, you could make a lid for it and seal it water-tight with plumber's tape.
Consider that after shipping (or the price of gas and time driving to a store) this costs at least twenty dollars. Twenty bucks buys plenty of new material to make your own stone holder. You could even get waterproof, oil-proof lexan polycarbonate for the same money and make a deluxe sharpening-station. It could store AND hold ALL the stones you could need, plus ALL the required honing guides and angle-setters a woodworker could ever want.
In practice, I have never spent any extra money on the numerous stone holders / sharpening-stations I have made. I just used spare scraps from around the shop, so the material-cost is essentially zero. They are about as simple as a cutting board... maybe simpler since you don't necessarily need to finish them.
When reviewing superfluous woodworking gadgets like these, I try to remember that some people just love cool gadgets. My tastes and thinking obviously differs from other woodworkers'. So please do not be insulted if you bought one and feel dumb for wasting your money. I mean no slight.
At the same time, I am reminded that a key attraction of woodworking is the plausibility of making beautiful or (at least) functional objects without wasting a lot of dough. Part of the fun of woodworking is making things. Part of the attraction is to SAVE money, not squander it on every little gizmo. Look at professional craftsmen to see what they use. Except for over-endowed, under-informed beginning hobbyists, I have never seen ANY competent woodworker use this kind of doohickey. Professionals won't spend money on ANYTHING they can make cheaper and better in five minutes.
So, while recognizing other's tastes and opinions I am compelled to ask; If you can't build a simple-stone holder from scraps in your shop, exactly what kind of woodworker are you?
Even a neophyte hack should be able to cobble something useful together for holding inert rectangular chunks of rock.
Gadgets like this stone-holder only prove that some people have more money than brains.
there... I feel better now. Hope you saved your money and got a laugh too! ;-)
