Tools and Hardware Reviews of Aquasana AQ-4100 Deluxe Shower Water Filter System with Adjustable Showerhead

Customer Review: Absolutely Amazing!
Summary: 5 Stars

I moved to Atlanta about nine months ago with my husband who has eczema, and we both began to notice serious skin irritation from the water here. For me, it was a matter of some discomfort, as well as developing dandruff problems for the first time in my life, but my husband's skin was going crazy. Finally after six months of suffering through this, I decided to buy him a shower filtration system for Valentine's Day. I wasn't sure what to expect, and I was really just hoping for any little change for the better.

That said, I was BLOWN AWAY by the enormous positive change in the quality of the water using this filter. The first time I used it, I came out of the shower and my skin felt like I had just spent half a day at a spa. I had been getting a blotchy red rash on my chest and back after showering before using this filter (probably from all the chlorine and other junk in the water), but the rash has completely gone away since we started using this filter. My husband also experienced tremendous relief from his eczema problems. Taking a shower feels so healthy now. We've been using it for about a month and I can't imagine ever going back.

A few other reviewers mentioned problems with the weight or installation or the casing cracking on this filter. I didn't have any of these problems. Even with the old, shaky pipes in my house, this filter was incredibly easy to install. The entire process, including the carbon filter flush, took me about ten minutes. The only thing that surprised me was that the water initially comes out with quite a lot of pressure when doing the filter flush, so I had to quickly move the bucket I was using to catch the carbonated water farther down the tub than I had anticipated (obviously not a big deal).

This filter is one of the best purchases I've ever made; although I haven't tried other models, if you want something that definitely works, this is what you're looking for.

Customer Review: filters well, but fragile it is
Summary: 2 Stars

We've had this for almost 3 years now.
It seems to do pretty well at filtering out chlorine, judging by smell and how my skin/hair feel. It does make a difference in how both feel.
I'd love to see actual measurements of chlorine reduction over time.

There's two of us, we take a shower each almost everyday (a bit overkill in my mind, sorry mom) and the filter seems to last 3 to 4 months. But remember there's no quantitative analysis going on here.

The whole contraption, with the exception the connections, is plastic. Given the mechanical loads it undergoes it's not surprising that it breaks fairly easily. The housing has fractured on ours with no unusual force being encountered.
( Ahhh epoxy... Wasn't I trying to *reduce* my exposure to something or another? Oops. )

Taking apart a used filter reveals a simple case containing what I assume to be activated charcoal, exactly like you may buy for an aquarium filter with a little bit of paper or synthetic mesh I assume is for sediment. Only thing is that if you did buy this much charcoal from a pet store, it would cost about one tenth what a replacement filter cost.

All filters must reduce water flow to some degree. This filter does pretty well here, the reduction is minimal.

If you're looking to reduce the odor (at least) of chlorine and don't have kids, and don't mind the steep replacement filter costs, and promise not to ever overtighten anything, nor ever to drop, pull, or stare directly into its eyes then this is the filter for you!!

Not awful but not recommended.

Customer Review: The best shower filtering system out there
Summary: 5 Stars

Why is this the best in my opinion? Simple, the filter media is large and separately housed from the shower head. Let me explain, there are filter systems out there where the filter is a small, circular cartridge that fits in your palm. It screws into the shower head. I think this system is terrible because it weighs down the shower head and the plastic components around the shower head degrade after about 2 years of steady use. I was frustrated until I found this system.

This filter media is great. Not only does it remove chlorine but it removes VOCs (volitile organic compounds) so that even the steam released by your shower is healthy and fresh smelling. The media itself is large so you know that more water is being filtered, thus your shower is cleaner. The water feels soft and you will notice this from the first time you use it. It reminds me of rainwater actually.

But don't buy this because the filter media is fantastic or because the design is great and it's easy to change filters. Buy it because of the difference it makes for your skin and hair. No kidding, this thing softened my hair immediately after the first shower. I don't need to use as much conditioner for my hair. Plus, I don't need to use as much hand and body lotion either. This is especially great during the dry winter months.

Buy it for your health and because honestly, showering with this shower filter system seriously is a pleasant experience for all your senses (and no, I have no affiliation whatsover with Aquasana - I just LOVE their product).

Customer Review: Best shower water filter
Summary: 5 Stars

My husband and I have been using these shower water filters for several years now. I had more trouble getting the old shower head off initially than installing the new system. (I'm 5'4" so I needed a step stool to do this) Wrap the pipe fittings with Teflon tape. (be sure to wrap in a clockwise fashion). This will make it easier when it's time to change out the filter. I don't use the shower head that came with the unit. I use a hand held unit that I already had. The difference in our skin and hair is very noticeable. Hair is softer and our skin is not near so dry. An added bonus is that the shower walls and door do not get the film on them from all the minerals in the water (we have very hard water here). Sign up for emails on Aquasana's website and you can almost always get 20% and free shipping. I didn't sign us up for the water for life because we actually get more than 6 mos. out of our filter since it's just the two of us. Tip- after you've got the water filter installed but before you put the shower head on, turn the water on, you will want to take a bucket to catch the water as it will be black from the carbon inside the filter. If you have plants, use it to water your plants. After about 2 gallons or so, the water should run clear. Now put the shower head on and run it for just a minute or so. I am really happy with this filter. [...] Aquasana AQ-4100 Deluxe Shower Water Filter System with Adjustable Showerhead

Customer Review: very satisfied
Summary: 4 Stars

I've had this filter and the kitchen counter-top unit for nearly two months. Here's a few thoughts on the shower filter.

The shower head is pretty great. I use the setting between massage and full spray. It uses ALL the jets and the water falls on you instead of spraying. Yet, there seems to be plenty of water. Kind of like a waterfall, which seems fitting.

The water itself has no bad odor. It simply smells like a fresh, cool, spring rain. None of the chlorine, or chemical odors that usually fill a bathroom. I notice that I don't cough in the shower like I used to. My skin is less dry out of the shower. My shampoo seems to lather better and rinses out faster and better. My hair is a little fuller, probably from less buildup-- both minerals and shampoo residue. My scalp and skin are less itchy.

I have not had any cracks, but I have only had it 2 months. The connection to the shower pipe has a drip.. drip.. drip.. leak. But I'm actually impressed. The pipe does not have a "flat" pipe end. I don't blame the shower filter for this. The shower head did have a small leak but has stopped.

I have no idea if it really "filters" all the stuff they say it does. Also the company uses questionable sales tactics on the internet. That "filter comparisons" website that pops up on EVERY "water filter" web search, is ran by the guy who owns the company. Kinda sleazy, I'm dropping a star for that.

Otherwise, it works good and I plan to keep using it.
