The reason I bought the lock is that I have a bad habit of locking my door and leaving my keys inside. I thought with a combination lock, that problem would go away. Except for an incident that occurred the day I installed the Sunnect, locking myself out appears to be a thing of the past.
I installed the lock but made a little mistake. When I closed the door behind me and locked it, the lock refused to acknowledge my key or the code I entered. I called customer support and went through a few steps, but the lock wouldn't open. Luckily for me, I didn't lock a patio door so I was able to get back in. The problem was that one of the connectors had come loose. Once that was fixed, the lock worked. I spoke several times with Michael in the customer support. He stayed past the 9 pm closing time for customer support to help me.
I needed to use a flat-head screwdriver and a pair of Vise-Grip pliers to take the old deadbolt out of the door and to remove a plastic spacer that kept the old lock tight in place.
I live in a condominium complex. The doorways are metal and the strike plate is much bigger than the magnetic one that comes with the lock so I can't use the Sunnect strike plate. I tried a ceramic magnet that I bought at a Lowe's store, but it wasn't strong enough. So I ordered Magcraft NSN0607 1/2-Inch Rare Earth Cube Magnets, 4-Count and put one of the magnets inside the door frame just below the strike plate. It works like a charm.
While the lock looks as good as any door lock could look, I don't like how I can't find a door knob to match the brass of the Sunnect AP501BB, which says it's bright brass, but it doesn't come close to the color of the brass door knobs made by Schlage, Kwikset, Baldwin, or any other I've seen. Because this lock is only for the top lock (deadbolt) it would be nice if the metal was a more standard color or if Sunnect made a regular door knob that matched the color of the AP501BB.
Other people have commented that it would be nice to have multiple key codes. I strongly agree with that sentiment. If you have a dog walker, a cleaning person or crew, or if you just need to give temporary access to maintenance, it would be great if you could give each of them a separate code and delete the codes corresponding to those you don't want to provide access to any longer. (I can imagine another use for a couple or family. After an argument with a spouse, it would be "interesting" if you could lock out him or her out of spite. Okay, I admit that I have a devious mind.) You can use the keys to restrict access, but the keys are expensive ($25 for two) and you have to erase all of them and re-code the ones that you want to allow continued access. I haven't decided if my cleaning woman will get a key or if I'll give her the code number. She's honest and needs to be so because she works for several other members of my extended family. (If she steals from one of us, she loses all of us as customers.)
The other design quibble I have is that the numbers on the keypad are hard to read while standing. I'm 5'8" and the angle is bad. I bet that someone who is 6'4" would really have a difficult time reading the numbers.
Conclusion: The lock is probably better for people who have a house so that you don't have to worry about matching the finish of other doors in an apartment or condominium building. The most succinct evaluation I can give is to say that I would buy one of these again. (I won't have to though because I kept the old lock so I can reinstall that when or if I move.)
