I had purchased a previous brand that needed an extra battery and had an internal motor to activate the switch. That one gave up in a couple of months..
This timer is exactely the "Solid State" unit I was looking for.. It is rated for lights and small motors or electrical appliance.. It has several programs, but you can only run one program at a time.. However, if I need it at a different time, there is a simple on/off switch.

Works well! You will need the hot(black), return(white) and switched(red) lines to the switch. If you're replacing a switch, make sure there aren't just two wires running to it before you purchase this one. I replaced another timer but had to run a new line. It also uses battery backup which is not advertised.
Otherwise, works as advertised and a bit more shallow than others, providing a little more space behind it in the box.

The switch may work fine. I have no idea. It will NOT work with a 3 way switch (where a light has more than one switch to turn it on and off). It wasn't until I received it that it said it works with a "single pole switch". I thought maybe it would have other hookup options, but would not work with my 3 way switch. Now it is opened. I can't use it and can't return it.Customer Review: Why don't they make this anymore?

I had one of these prior to purchasing these two. They are really great products if you can get passed the bad instructions for programming. Been 1 day short of 7 months and the second installation (of the 3) died. Batteries are good and the display and manual switch are non-functional after death. Did get replacement from manufacture and all is good.Customer Review: looks nice-BUT

Switch looks good BUT it doesn't do what they say it will. I pulled my old single pole switch -wired as directed and I couldn't turn the lamp off or on with the switch. I then contacted tech support-what a joke ! They told me I must have a three-way switch set up( I do not). At that point I said lets send this back- Amazon was wonderful in that regard.
