Tools and Hardware Reviews of TRENDnet RJ-11/RJ-45 Crimp/Cut/Strip Tool TC-CT68 (Blue)Customer Review: Perfect Summary: 5 Stars
This was my first attempt to crimp CAT5/6 ethernet for home networking. I bought a spool of CAT5 and ends from Home Depot and bought this tool online. I had absolutely no problem with this tool. It worked perfectly every time. I only needed it for a short time, but it seemed nice and sturdy.
By the way, don't forget to look up color diagrams and make sure you use the correct twisted pairs together. It isn't enough to just have the right stright-through connections from one end to another. You must match the correct pairs. Although color doesn't matter, you have to pair the expected two at the other end. That's how it does error correction, by assuming the same interference is seen on each twisted pair and cancels out the same signal on both. If you don't pair them correctly, it cannot error correct. I needed a 50 foot run under the house, and it didn't work until I paired the correct twisted pair. Do some internet research on this and print some colored guides.
Customer Review: Works well Summary: 4 Stars
These RJ Crimpers do the job as expected and have a fairly solid feel to them. The ratcheting mechanism could be a little better, but for the price it does just fine. If you're a professional, you will probably want the Ideal or similar brand of crimpers for the hundreds or more of connectors you'll do a week. For all you DIY guys who will use them a few times a year, they are great and will do fine for your home networking projects. I never use the strippers or cutters on the tool as they never seem to do that great a job without more effort than a razor knife and wire cutters, but that is the same with all other brands of the same tool across the board.
Customer Review: Got It To Work On First Try Summary: 4 Stars
The crimper works well and seems very solid and heavy. Minus a star because the instructions included are minimal at best. I found a few videos online that were helpful. I bought this because it always ended up that on cables I would buy (from Amazon) would eventually wear out on the plastic part that is supposed to snap in to your ethernet socket. Eventually the snap was gone creating a loose connection that would easily slip out. This ends up being a very inexpensive way to have a 'new' cable. Since I have had no luck with wireless routers I'm dependent on ethernet cables and this is a great tool and money saver.
Customer Review: Stripper part of tool not straightforward, but it crimps great Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a newbie to making Cat5 patchcords, and found this tool to be great. It worked perfectly with the Tripp-Lite connectors (make sure you buy the right connector (stranded/solid) to match your cable!!
The only difficulty I had was getting the stripper to work on round cable. It's extremely sharp, and slices right through the insulator and internal wires with only a little pressure. I had to slightly close the cutter and twist the cable to make a slice around the circumfrence. The insulator came right off after that.
Customer Review: Great light-duty crimper Summary: 4 Stars
While I work alot with XLR and NL connectors, I don't often need to build an RJ-11 or RJ-45 cable (I usually buy pre-made cables), but I needed to repair a Polycom which had two cables terminating at a power supply. I decided it was time to add this crimper to my toolbox. This crimper is easy to use and should be fine for light-duty work. I couldn't figure out how to get the racket mechanism to lock the handles closed (when not in use) and the card the tool came on doesn't explain that function. Otherwise, a fine purchase.
