Tools and Hardware Reviews of TRENDnet RJ-11/RJ-45 Crimp/Cut/Strip Tool TC-CT68 (Blue)

Customer Review: Inexpensive way to find out that you need something better...
Summary: 2 Stars

The one I purchased managed to crimp about six cat6 plugs before developing a consistent problem with pin8. I hoped to get more use out of it but I guess you get what you pay for. It is possible that the product is less effective with cat6. Although I have seen it advertised for use with either cat5/6 plugs, Trendnet does not specifically address this on their website other than to say it works with RJ-45. I like Trendnet and have some of their other networking products, so hopefully I just purchased a defective crimper.

Customer Review: Doesn't crimp reliably. Waste of time/money.
Summary: 2 Stars

I have tried to use this crimper to make my own CAT-5 cables a few times and I have never had success. It seems to push the contact areas on the connectors (where the network card makes contact with the connector) down too far so that the network card's contacts can't reach the contacts on the connector. I have tried not squeezing too hard and it seems to still have the same problem. The other functions like stripping the sleeve off the CAT-5 cable seem to work fine but it doesn't perform it's main function very well.

Customer Review: Just what I was after
Summary: 4 Stars

I don't do a lot of cabling but after losing my old crimper I was looking for value. The crimper seems to be good and sturdy and works well enough. It has a Cat 5-type stripper and a flat cable stripper too. I still haven't figured out how to keep the thing closed in my toolbox--there's a "release" knob on the ratchet bar between the two handles but I think that's just operator error on my part. If you are the average computer geek I think this crimper will fill the bill. Decent price and it works.

Customer Review: No problems, works just like it should. Seems very durable.
Summary: 5 Stars

I am not a professional and do not use this crimper everyday, but for light use here and there I am completely satisfied with this tool. I have used it to do both 6 and 8 pin plugs and it works fine on both. I have not used the wire stripping feature, though.

The ratcheting mechanism on it seems kind of useless and is difficult to get to stay in the locked position, but it's really not a necessary feature anyway.

Would highly recommend, especially for the price.

Customer Review: Gets the job done
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used a few crimpers in my day and although this isn't the fanciest tool it gets the job done, and it does it well. It feels sturdy in your hand and I think this will have some longevity to it. The blades are plenty sharp, and I've had no troubles stripping cabling or cutting it. (Made about 20ish cables so far - all perfect) I would have liked to have it auto-release when successfully crimped, but apart from that... for this price... you really can't go wrong.
