Tools and Hardware Reviews of Point N Paint As Seen On TV Painting System KitCustomer Review: Compare with the roller and brush, PNPK is the best choice. Summary: 4 Stars
I give Point N Paint Kit (PNPK) 4.5 stars. It is not a perfect Kit but I am very happy with it.
Never painted before. Recently, I painted my pantry with a brush, the best brush in the market, a very expansive one. Then painted the dirty portion of my first closet with the same brush, two coats. Since I did not get the color right, painted portion and unpainted portion made the closet to triple color, shelves are white, walls two colors, a big mess. Then I decided to use PNPK to paint the rest of the walls to make the closet walls to the same color. As I was using the PNPK, I felt the different between the brush and PNPK.
My wall is not a flat surface. It is a kind of high-low-mixed textured wall. When I used brush, it was very difficult to get the paint to the low surface no matter what I do, press harder, tap, beat, repeat, etc. I had to fully load the paint on the brush and back forth many times to get low surface painted. Since some low surface got the paint and some did not, I had to do the second coat, also heavily loaded the brush with the paint. But when using the PNPK, it was very easy to get both high and low surface painted at the same time. I did not make special effort to paint the low surface at all.
Now the important part, when I used the brush, if I got lot paint on one location, it was very difficult to spread the extra paint to another location. Therefore, there were many heavier areas. But when using the PNPK, it was very easy to spread the extra paint to other locations or the extra paint was sucked back to the pad. All the high and low textured surface can be covered only use a very thin layer of paint. The walls looked very even and neat.
Side by side, exactly the same wall and the same paint, the brush painted portions thick and heavy, almost flattened and destroyed high-low-mixed wall texture. But PNPK painted portions, all the portions have very thin layer of paint and very uniform. If it is not for matching up the brushed thick paint, I did not have to get the second coat on. The wall texture was still the same after painting and the texture was very well maintained. Since when using PNPK, it only need very thin layer of paint, it saved lot of paint. Also, as soon as the outlines are done, the middle part of the wall can be painted extremely fast. The pad does hold more paint than the brush. One load of the pad can cover bigger area than one load of the brush can paint. In addition, in a short practice, I can handle the PNPK well but I still do not know how to handle the brush professionally. For the above mentioned reasons, I give PNPK 4.5 stars and give brush 1.5 stars.
As I said before, PNPK is not a perfect Kit. On some extremely narrow or small spaces, using the brush is easier. PNPK provided only one small pad holder. The small pad holder should be with the big pad holder or with the small pad. As soon as the paint is on the small pad, it is unpractical to remove the small pad from the small pad holder without making mess, then put the small pad holder to the big pad holder.
I practiced PNPK many times without the paint on the walls. I have to really pay attention to watch the angles and directions to not make mess on the ceiling lines and base boards. You can see where the white hair goes. I do not think the small pad on the small pad holder could do the good job on the dividing lines.
But I hand held the small pad without the holder to do most of the outlines for the shelves, baseboards, fixtures, and curves. It was very accurate, but I have to really pay attention on how I position the tip of the small pad. I did the ceiling lines with the big pad and did the good job. I did not paint the ceiling since the ceiling was not dirty. Since I did not use the pole, I will not common on it. The mini paint tray makes the paint loading very easy. Most of times, I did not load the paint evenly on the pad. But no problem, the pad can easily push the paint on the wall from one area to another area, the paint on the wall is even, the result is professional. Much much better than the brush painted areas.
Anyway, for me, PNPK is much easier to use than the brush, less or no mess, save paint. Especially, when the outlines were done, using the big pad is really really fast on the middle areas. The result is perfect and professional.
If someone wants to try PNPK, practice without paint first. Make the pad and holder against different part of the wall individually and together. Watch the hair on the pad. Watch the angles. Try to see how much force you should use. See how you can hold and move the system without making mess. Then try it and practice in your closet without paint because closet has much small space to move around. After you have some idea how the system works, practice in a small area. Prepare to get some mess. If you make mess in the closet, that is not a big deal. Don't get mad if you did not get a good result at the first 50 strokes. At the 100 strokes, you are flying. Try to practice hand hold the body of the small pad. Only load little paint on the tip of the small pad. Watch how to position the tip without making mass. This small tip can be very useful for doing the outlines and curves. Since you only need to use very thin layer of paint to cover the wall, turn off all the heating and air-blowing equipment to avoid paint drying too fast. Working on a small area at a time. If you see the paint did not cover the wall well, immediately load paint on the pad and push around the pad on that area again. If there is too much paint on one area, immediately using the pad to push the paint to other area. You may need more strokes to quickly make the paint on that small area even then move on to the next small area. In this way, you might be able to avoid the second coat. In my first closet, I did use the second coat. But in my second closet, I become very experienced and I did not use the second coat. Now I am ready to paint my other rooms with PNPK.
By the way, my husband painted my daughter's room with a roller. It took him a half day to get the room taped with my daughter together, ceiling lines and base boards. It was not even at all. He has to retouch many areas. The paint was thick and heavy. Some paint leak through the tape and made mess. Some tape stuck and dried up with the paint on the walls. It is a quite a job to get stuck tape off the wall. Compare with the roller and brush, PNPK is the best choice.
When you use the brush, you may need to make many strokes to get an area right. It is the same thing with the PNPK. Especially when you do the ceiling line, takes your time and uses several strokes to get it right. The plastic on the pad will provide some guide for you. Remember, the brush is still the good tool for small areas. Get big pad, small pad, and brush all ready.
