Tanita scales as a group are much more accurate and reliable than the competitors brands, however they make few basic digitals scales. I chose this one because I wanted a no frills scale made by Tanita, not because it is solar. However the solar power source works fine, taking maybe 15 seconds after the light is turned on in the room to power up. The scale is sturdy, not flimsy plastic. The weight reading on this scale matches the one at the doctor's office and at the gym. If I step on and off repeatedly, I never get a variation of more than 0.5 lb. I specifically chose this scale because it does not have a memory of your weight (I prefer to keep that info to myself). Our first Tanita 'Solar' bathroom scales is so good and accurate, and it has worked perfectly for at least 7 years already, so we bought this second for a home overseas.
The scales need only some sunlight or light from a lamp/light turned on in the room for a few seconds to 'come to life'. They use no batters, no outside energy source.
We have regularly checked these scales against Doctor's Office scales and find that our Tanita 'solar' scales are always within 1/2 pound or .2kg of the readings in the doctor's office.
The price offered at Amazon is very good. Product arrived in less time than expected, well packed and in perfect condition. Get one!!

I have only had the Tanita HS301 Solar Powered Electronic Bathroom Scale for only a month. When I first received the scale, I purposely weighed myself every hour to see if the scale would maintain its accuracy and it did. Never once did the scale fluctuate. I now purposely do not weigh myself but twice a month with hopes of seeing positive results within that time period. Once again, the scale maintains its accuracy. Another wonderful feature is that it is solar powered. So far, very little lighting is required for the scale to work. This means, money will be saved due to not needing to purchase batteries. Very accurate and easy to use. Because my bathroom has no windows, I thought that I'd have to use this scale in one of my other rooms, but just the light over my sink powers it up in about 10 seconds. I've weighed myself right before going to the doctor and being weighed on his balance scale, and the two readings were exactly the same. As a test, I've tried weighing myself several times repeatedly, and the reading was the same every time, which has never been the case with other scales I've owned. This scale is heavy and solidly made, and I expect it to last a long time. Also, it's nice to know that I'll never have to buy a battery for it.Customer Review: Best Scale I Have Ever Owned

I've been using this scale everyday for the past 9 months to monitor my progress while dieting and taking Boot Camp at the local YMCA. It is by far the best scale I have ever owned and would buy another one in a minute if this one broke tomorrow. The scale has worked flawlessly so far. It is easy to read, very accurate (as compared to the sliding weight scale at the Y) and has a precision of 0.5 lbs. The best thing about it - it is completely powered by solar and you never have to replace batteries! The only very small downside is that it takes about 1/2 minute to power-up after you turn the lights on. Highly recommended!
