Tools and Hardware Reviews of Tersano lotus LBU100 Sanitizing SystemCustomer Review: Lotus Sanitizer - Separating the truth from the hype Summary: 2 Stars
While reading about this product via the reviews here and on a blog frequented by the owner I was surprised to see a number of extraordinary claims about what this product could do. Some of these include:
* Windows and Sinks - just spray on them, you don't even need to wipe.
* BBQ Grill - cleans so good all you need to do is wipe down.
* Takes the stains out of your rugs
* Will get smells out of a mattress
* Gets rid of canker sores, athletes foot, and planters warts
* Acts like Spray n Wash if it's added to laundry
* All in one bathroom cleaner that kills mold, mildew, soap scum, toilet stains.
After two months of using this product I can confidently say the following. If the various testing agencies (including our own government's) can be trusted, then this is an effective sanitizer (antibacterial and antiviral) for foods and household areas. However, aside from being a moderate degreaser this product does nothing to assist in cleaning. I repeat, nothing. It also suffers from some serious design flaws. Here are some of the problems I had with the design of the product right out of the box:
1) The cord is way too short. If the LBU100 is not within a foot of a plug you're in trouble.
2) The cartridges don't snap into place the way they would if you were inserting an ink cartridge into a printer. Because of this, you're never quite sure that it has been inserted properly.
3) Much like the cartridges, the bowl and sprayer don't snap into place either. You're not confident they were placed on the unit correctly.
4) The beep sound is annoying as hell! Why can't it have a pleasant chime? We're just sanitizing water, not driving without a seatbelt!
5) I managed F5 errors twice immediately upon my 1st and 2nd test of the product. This seems to be a common complaint the first few times it's used.
6) Instructions are vague regarding the actual process of cleaning. Let's say you're trying clean a cutting board. The instructions tell you to spray obviously, but they don't say how long before we wipe.
7) You have to tell the machine whether you're using the spray bottle or the bowl, yet the symbols to identify the two look almost identical. Sheesh, even a #1 and a #2 or a 'B' and 'S' to represent the bowl or sprayer would have been much clearer.
8) There is a small pool of water that remains in the unit after the spray bottle and bowl are removed. If it's left alone you wonder if it will start to collect dirt and/or germs. The inventor recommends we place a small red plastic cap inside the unit when we are finished. However doing so will cause the water to leak all over the unit. There has to be an easier way. Also, there should be an area, even a dimple on the unit itself, to hold and store the cap when not in use.
9) The bowl is actually really horrible to use for sanitizing anything other than small fruits and vegetables. Head of lettuce? Forget it. I remember the owner responding something about always chopping up his lettuce before he sanitizes it. Mr. Owner/Inventor, that's not how it works. You listen to us, your customers, and make this thing fit a head of lettuce instead of getting us change our behaviors. You'll sell a lot more of these that way.
Ok, enough griping for now. Now for some positive feedback. The hardest thing to overcome when using the Lotus is the need to have a scent to indicate cleanliness. Thanks to endless advertising, our minds have been accustomed to equating strong, overpowering scents like lemon, orange, and even pine with cleanliness. What does a pine tree know about cleaning things anyway? It does have a little bit of that "air after thunderstorm" smell due to the ionization. It's a fine, mild scent, actually pleasant. I'll hate to find out if down the road it's discovered that exposure to ozone causes cancer, but I'd trust this over the caustic scent of bleach any day.
The spray bottle holds two cups of water which is enough to spray down your entire kitchen. The bowl holds about a gallon of water. The box I received did not contain the vegetable retainer to hold items underwater in the bowl. To their credit, I emailed Tersano and had one delivered almost immediately. It takes about 2 min to sanitize a water bottle and about 3 1/2 min to sanitize a bowl if I remember correctly. While it's running, it tends to drown out all other sounds in the kitchen and you'll find yourself shouting over it. The resulting ozonated water is quite interesting in feel and texture. After you've used it you'll notice your hands have become much softer. I believe ozonated water is one of the tricks health spas use into making you believe the $500 you spent wasn't a complete waste.
Foods sanitized with the unit did seem to last longer. I would go so far to say lettuce lasted twice as long in the refrigerator after being sanitized. If the items you try to sanitize are not fully cleaned, the unit will give you an error message and you will need to start over from scratch. This is a frequent occurrence and can be frustrating, especially considering the length of time it takes to run a bowl of water. If you try to incorporate the sanitizer into a return from your shopping trip you will find it will add a lot of time, perhaps up to an hour before everything is clean. I remember one time where I washed and rinsed some cat food bowls by hand and it still took two attempts before the unit said they were completely sterile. I found that the colder the water, the better chance that the sanitizer would work the first time.
Now I would like to take down these claims of its cleaning prowess one-by-one:
De-fungal:
In spite of claims to the contrary, I found that the nasty little wart that started growing on my pinky had no intent of stopping in spite of my near constant use. In addition, I would pour bowl after bowl into a tub which contained one of those non-slip bath mats. Still, it wasn't long before I would see some funk growing around the suction cups of the mat.
Deodorizer:
I tested this by cleaning out a the inside of a smelly trash can each time the garbage was taken out. I also used it to scrub down a smelly old mattress that was in need of replacement. I must have used 10 bottles on the mattress, scrubbing down both sides as hard as I could. After about two hours worth of sanitizing and scrubbing, both sides of the mattress were soaked. Still, neither the trash can nor the mattress showed improvement.
Bathroom Cleaner:
I would frequently spray down the inside and around the toilet but I would see no evidence it was preventing either water stains or toilet breath. I would spray the nozzle and handles of the bathtub after a shower, no difference. Existing water spots would not be prevented from showing up. There was a small black spot of mildew on the plastic shower liner. I must have scrubbed that thing as hard as I could have with a near constant stream of ozonated water. Despite continuous, repeated sprayings and wipings it did nothing to remove it.
Floor cleaner, window cleaner & spot remover:
I saw no evidence it cleaned spots, spills, or dried food any better than scrubbing by hand with regular water. In fact, it tended to streak foods rather then remove the stains. Same with windows and you certainly don't see any benefit by spraying unless you wipe with the microfiber cloths so whoever it was that claimed otherwise was definitely sniffing too much ozone.
Kitchen cleaner:
This is the one area I think benefited from use of the sanitizer and sprayer. It did seem to help take the grease off a stove better than just plain water or even a soapy sponge. I would expect this since many detergents contain deionizing ingredients. I have one of the stoves that can easily show grease streaks unless cleaned thoroughly. It also chopped through that greasy dust on the top of the fridge that I rarely get to. I do think the Lotus works as a mild degreaser and you can zip through the kitchen spraying and cleaning everything from counters to cabinets with only one bottle and a microfiber towel. You will not be able to spray the inside of your sink and come back to find it has dried to a spot-free shine as someone else claimed, but you can spray it last and kill the germs and bacteria out of one of the dirtier areas in your house. (I read somewhere that your sink has more germs and bacteria than your toilet, believe it or not.) Plus, when you're done your hands feel soft from using the water.
If you go to the Tersano website you will find all kinds of test results from laboratories with fancy sounding names that will dispute many of the things I am telling you. All I know is in my real-world testing, most claims of the Lotus being an effective cleaner failed miserably. I really hated to knock the product because I wanted it to do all the things other reviewers claimed it would do. Unfortunately it fell short, way short.
I think the inventor should focus on the fact that this product works as a sanitizer, tone down the claims of it being a cleaner and leave it at that. Since our Food and Drug Administration can no longer be trusted (global food imports, e-coli, killer spinach, killer peanuts, and killer tomatoes that became jalapenos, etc.) just a claim that the Lotus is an effective personal sanitizer is enough to generate interest among U.S. buyers. The claims of it being a miracle cleaner and stain remover are suspect. Strangely enough, even the pictures on the box are suspect. Seriously, what cat and dog would sit and let you spray them while you clean out their pet bed? Another thing to consider is the time and aggravation involved in getting it to work correctly and adding an additional step to your normal routine. I'm the kind of person that would spend the extra time using it. I noticed my mom avoided using it and I found it would sit largely untouched until I came over and started playing around with it. A bummer since this was her present.
There is one other important thing to mention about this product. The claims of unreliability among many of the reviewers here. Unfortunately, I will need to be one of the statistics as it started squealing a high pitched noise as if the machine were about to lock up after only two months of use. It was returned after this time and I never asked for a replacement.

This amazing Sanitizing System from Tersano lets you turn on your faucet and treat your home to an effective sanitizer that safely wipes out germs, odors, stains, mold, mildew and pesticides -- all without chemicals. When you use lotus, you turn ordinary tap water into the world's most powerful sanitizer in about two minutes, for a fraction of a penny. Studies have shown that ozone is 50-percent more powerful and more than 3,000 times faster acting on bacteria than chlorine -- at 100 times the strength. Water treated with this system will kill 99.9 percent of germs on any surface it contacts. Use the lotus to clean countertops, appliances, floors, high chairs and other baby items, upholstery, windows, cutting boards, and any surface that attracts mold or mildew. Even carpet and laundry stains -- including red wine and pet stains -- are easy to remove, with no harsh fumes or residue. Lotus also eliminates germs and pesticides from your food. It even extends the shelf life of fruit and produce up to four times longer than if they've been rinsed with tap water.
The lotus system can even be used to freshen and deodorize pet areas, or other potentially smelly places. | How It Works The system has two main purposes: (1). to disinfect surfaces and (2). to remove pesticides and kill germs on food. It does this using ordinary tap water. The lotus patented Oxyshield technology infuses cold tap water with an extra oxygen atom, creating a natural sanitizer. By passing air through 4,500 volts of electricity, the lotus system splits oxygen molecules into atoms and forces this extra atom to combine and form super-oxygen, or ozone. The third oxygen atom becomes the sanitizing agent, a natural oxidant -- which kills bacteria and viruses, and neutralizes pesticides. Using the lotus spray bottle, it takes about two to three minutes to turn tap water into antibacterial lotus water with 100-percent potential (this is indicated on the unit); and then it remains fully effective for about 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, the contents begin to revert to plain water. A countdown timer on the unit tells you when it's time to reload and recharge. Once the tap water reaches its fully transformed potential (in about five minutes, if you?re using the bowl), maximum bacteria and pesticide reduction is achieved after two minutes of soaking. That same helpful countdown timer tells you when your food is completely sanitized and cleansed of pesticide residues. The lotus Sanitizing System was recognized as one of the Best Inventions of 2006 by Time Magazine. It was also recognized by Donny Deutsch as The Big Idea of the Month. Key Technical Specs:
