Tools and Hardware Reviews of Tersano lotus LBU100 Sanitizing SystemCustomer Review: It works Summary: 5 Stars
It works, it's real. Ozone isn't a well-known disinfectant/sanitizer, but go ahead and do a Google search on ozone and sanitation and you'll find academic articles on the subject. Apparently the technology is used for water sanitation on the municipal level and also to kill bacteria in aquariums and spas, not to mention its accepted use in food processing. There are also a lot of "holistic/alternative medicine" sites regarding ozonated water, but the manufacturer of this product isn't making any sort of health claims in that vein of things, which is perfectly fine.
It's not easy to tell if something is killing bacteria or not, but two small "tests" I've done bear out the effectiveness of the product (at least in my mind). This might sound funny, but I have smelly feet. Foot odor is due to bacterial overgrowth on the feet, and I used to use Betadine (povidone-iodine) to eradicate the odor (which works). With the Tersano unit, I took some of the ozonated water, poured it into a large container and soaked my feet in the water. And after about 2 minutes of soaking, it takes away the odor, which means it kills off the bacteria.
Another thing I've tried is using the ozonated water as mouthwash. (It's not what the instructions recommend, but I thought what the heck...) After gargling with the stuff for about 20 seconds, I find that the bad breath goes away. Again, which implies it's killing off bacteria. Works just like (if not better than) Listerine to knock out morning breath. Obviously, it doesn't impart "minty breath". But the bad odors go away.
Anyway, it seems there are a lot of ozonators out there (do a Google search). But this one seems to be one of the easier ones to use in terms of consumer applications.
If you really want to assess the bactericidal activity of this thing, the thing to do would be to get an ORP meter (oxidation-reduction potential meter), or get some petri dishes with bacteria and subject them to the ozonated water and do colony counts after treatment. In a sense, it's a leap of faith to use the product, because you can't see microorganisms to begin with. But silly as it might sound, the small tests I've done confirm in my mind that the unit works, and if you're the scientific type who wants confirmation via ORP readings or bacterial colony counts, then go ahead--I think you'll come to the same conclusion.
Customer Review: I am devoted to my Lotus Summary: 4 Stars
My relationship with my Lotus is a little like a long happy marriage. Yes, there are some bad times, maybe even some really, really bad times, but overall it is a good experience. It is absolutely wonderful to be able to clean my home (or, better yet, have my husband clean my home) without chemicals. In the past my lungs would always hurt for hours after cleaning because of the chemicals, and that was true even using "natural" products like Melaleuca or Simple Green. Now I can clean without pain. Well, except the pain of cleaning in general, which I hate, but I digress. I use the Lotus to clean fruit and veggies too, though not as religiously as I should. But it's nice to know your produce is actually clean and ready to eat when you take it out of the bowl or fridge.
So when did the honeymoon end? Well, we went through a period where the dang thing didn't work at all. It would F1, F1, F1 no matter what we did, with either attachment. We did everything recommend in the manual and on the website, with no luck. We called customer service, and did some more stuff they told us to do, and still the Lotus just faulted and faulted. We were just about ready to get a divorce from our Lotus (customer service authorized a return), when it suddenly saw the error of its ways and started working again. That was months ago and it has been fine ever since. Our theory is that there was some contaminant stuck in the sanitizing mechanism that eventually just worked its way out, but who knows. We were so happy to have it back that we nearly cried. (Actually, I'm pretty sure my husband did shed a tear, but he claims it was onions).
Some advice if you buy one, based on our experience: Always make sure the water is well below the line on either attachment before you charge it. Also, we would recommend charging a bowl of water first and THEN putting in the fruit and veggies to soak, as opposed to charging the water with the fruit/veggies already in the bowl.We think this might be a contributing factor in keeping the thing working.
Bottom line: we've had our Lotus for more than a year and it is great. We would definitely buy it again, faulting problems and all.
Oh, and we just finally bought the Lotus mop but haven't got it yet. Wish us luck.
Customer Review: One star just because it's a good idea. Summary: 1 Stars
This is the first time I have ever written a review but felt compelled to write one on this product. Let me start by saying that never have I wanted a product to work as badly as I did this one. My husband and I both use CPAP machines to sleep and I would love to have something like this to sanitize our masks and equipment besides vinegar. You're not supposed to use bleach as it will deteriorate the materials. I was leary of purchasing because of all the reviews I read about the errors and it not getting through the cycle, but I really needed something like this so I thought I'd take a chance.
The first one I received I tried to run a cycle of plain water just like the instructions say, but it kept stopping around 97 to 99% and giving me the F1 error. I tried the bowl and the bottle at least a half dozen times each with the same result. I then called their CS and she said to try it with bottled water. I did and got the same result. She said this means the unit is defective and needs to be replaced.
I thought about returning it for a refund but like I said I really need something like this so I asked for a replacement instead. The replacement arrived, I ran a cycle and was thrilled when it finished. I sanitized our masks and equipment and was very pleased with the results. I thought no more would I have to clean our equipment in vinegar and smell that awful smell every night. I also cleaned some lettuce which came out nice and clean. I tried the bottle and although I felt that it did freshen up the smell I couldn't really see that it cleaned anything better than water. But then it started giving me the the dreaded F1. About every fourth or fifth cycle it would finish but mosly just F1, even on plain water. While researching online I came across info that stated that there is a little wheel in the bottom of the bowl and bottle that is supposed to turn while the unit is operating. The ones on mine only turn sometimes. I also read that there are not supposed to be large bubbles entering the water during operation. Yet when my unit reached around 38%, hugh bubbles would fill the containers. With great sadness I sent it back for a refund.
If anyone ever produces a sound product that sanitizes I will be the first in line to get one.
Customer Review: Love it! Summary: 5 Stars
This is an amazing device.
I thought this was a great idea when I saw it, but I was initially skeptical. Let's face, it, you can't really see it working. So I did a few test-runs before I posted this review.
I had a ton of produce in the fridge on the day I got it- kiwi, apricots, grapes, cauliflower, jicama, kumquats, you name it. I rinsed it all and ran everything through the sanitizer, and sure enough, it's a week and a half later, and what's left still looks great. Definitely increases shelf life.
I did do a specific test- I had some cherries were on the verge of getting mooshy, so I decided to run them through the Lotus Sanitizer and put them back in the fridge. We went out of town, and they've been sitting untouched in a bowl in the fridge this whole time. While they look a little wrinkly, they're not fuzzy or slimy, which is definitely what I would expect by this point.
Heavily contaminated or fuzzy items do require extra processing. I had to run grapes, berries, and kiwi though twice. I just tipped the water out through the top of the strainer and refilled- no biggie. We have really hard water here, which I thought might be a problem, but everything went incredibly smoothly.
I do wish that the spray bottle had a bit of a finer spray, but that's quibbling. The oxygenated water made quick work of the mildew in my shower. My husband actually thought that I had used bleach.
Yes, it's initially expensive, but when I think about how much money we've spent on "green" cleaners and spoiled produce, it seems like a no-brainer. I like the fact that we're not adding packaging or chemicals to landfills or groundwater. Plus- what is your peace of mind worth? I rinsed grapes thoroughly in the sink, would have sworn they were clean, and still had to run them through the system twice before they were OK. Normally, that first rinse in the sink would have been all they got. Heaven knows what was on them to begin with...ew.
This system is out on my counter along with my toaster and coffeemaker- it's invaluable. The mopping system and the water purifier are next on my list, and I'm thinking of getting a system for each member of my family for Christmas. Impressive job, Tersano!
Customer Review: I LOOOOOOOOOVE MY LOTUS Summary: 5 Stars
I broke out the Lotus. I LOVE it! First of all, it works perfectly. No functioning problems whatsoever.
I used it on stains on the carpet and it got up stains that many different stain removers have failed to do. So its worth it for that alone. I went through 6 bottles just on the carpets.
At night I got out my black light research box and found my handy little UVA. Turned out the lights in my guest bathroom. My father-in-law (87) has been over a lot and he starts peeing when he opens the door. It was disgusting. My wife started screaming. The floor. The walls. All over the toilet. Almost all of the illuminations was bacteria. There are bathroom products that illuminate under UVA but they are speckles and look different - obviously not smeary baterial infestations. So we left the lights out and got the UVA and hit the slime with the LOTUS and zap!!!! almost all were gone in a nano. It was amazing. My wife sighed "Thank God" like we were going to have to move or something.
From there I went over the kitchen (not as gross but bad) and the other bathrooms. I went through (I know you will think I am lying by I'm not) 15 more bottles. Door handles, cabinents. Windowes. Walls! It is really disturbing what is alive in your house!
You should all go out and buy a UVA lamp and a lotus. You can go into your bathroom and you won't believe it. You'll totally freak out. As you use the LOTUS you will see the bateria dying and how fast and easy it is too clean a toilet in 10 seconds. With the UVA you can see your target! I called my compulsive mother and sister in law and both want one. We spent 2 hours cleaning just our bathrooms and the kitchen. Its fun cleaning with the lights out. And the LOTUS is so great because you just blast it and you don't care about getting the spray all over.
I absolutely love it!!! I think it is a real winner! If you do a TV thing this would sell it big time.
A spray bottle version only for $100 would be awesome. The bowl is great, but its the bottle that sells the thing and for $100 it would pay for itself in 2 to 3 months.
Congratulations! A total winner!
Way to go!
Bruce
