I have an old house, in which you have to wonder what people were thinking when they installed the wiring. You walk into the converted attic, and the light fixture (and its switch) are in the wall on the opposite side of the room. Any house over 50 years is likely to have a few idiosyncracies like this. One way to fix them is to hire an electrician for $100 an hour, and resign yourself to paying him for a full day's work. Another way is to use one of these. You just screw the switch to the wall (using hidden screws), then plug the receiver module into the wall outlet, and plug a floor or table lamp into that. It only takes 10 minutes.
I've had one for a week, and I like it so much, I ordered two more. There are a few slight drawbacks to these, but they're so cost-efficient, it's worth it, especially for out-of-the-way places.
One drawback is that the switch has to be pressed, rather than flipped like a regular lightswitch. If you're familiar with a British-style lightswitch, the behaviour is similar, though aesthetically it looks like a regular American switch. I'm sure there are practical (electronic?) reasons for the choice, but it would have been nice to have something that looked/felt more like a regular switch.
Another, and this is slight, is that because the switch contains a battery that allows it to communicate with the outlet remotely, it's very slightly thicker than a regular switch, since it attaches to the wall surface, and is not recessed into it like a regular switch would be.
All in all, it appears to be a great product.
